Did Gluten Free okay. Server was nice but not having the best day. Asked the hostess if we could have a table instead of a booth. She said yes, then sat us at a booth and took off before we could say something. We had an elderly person with us who struggles getting in and out of a booth. Needed a chair... But we managed. Server dropped silverware that knocked the lemon off my iced tea glass. And people just left it on the floor... Employees were all just stepping over it. I was afraid someone would slip on the lemon so I ended up taking care of it. Not sure we will be back. Food was okay nothing special but the prices are above average.
January 2025: visited this gem of a coffee shop twice while in town. Cappuccino and a cortado, and a decaf cap over the course of the two visits. The foam on the cap was perfection. Excellent gluten-free options as well; donuts, muffins, and a bagel sandwich, high quality on the gluten-free options.
I cannot recommend Cream of the Cakes enough. The amount of pros I have to list is extensive, but worth the read for anyone scrolling reviews as they debate trying out this bakery.
- Excellent, top-notch quality: I'm consistently blown away by the taste and art of these scratch-made baked goods. Things I used to dislike, I fell in love with when made by Cream of the Cakes (French Silk pie; cheesecake; etc.) Just incredible. The cakes are as the best cakes should be: moist, flavourful, rich in taste and beautiful to boot. I have not found any bakery in the Twin Cities or beyond that can compare to the level of quality and flavour that this little Lakeville one achieves.
- Good variety regardless of space challenges: While the bakery's space is quite small, there is still a more that sufficient variety of things available to try. There are many different cupcakes all named after women that inspired the owner/founder/head baker Liz, which is fun and interesting. There is FANTASTIC quiche in multiple flavours. There are "cake parfaits" (delicious), chocolate-dipped pretzel sticks, the best cake pops known to man, cookie wedges, cinnamon rolls, cheesecakes, whole cakes for those who forgot to plan ahead, and even "pupcakes" --- safe, adorable treats for your dog. There's a lot more... Try them all!
- Seasonal offerings: You'll never be let down coming to Cream of the Cakes frequently if you like/need to try new things frequently, or are hoping for something available that's relevant to the current holiday. There's always something creative and different available.
- Good prices and a variety of them too. Yes, ordering a custom cake can get expensive, but the quality of what you get is more than worth the price. Additionally, the prices of things available otherwise is more than reasonable even outside of today's inflation climate. The discounted $1.25 day-olds is a nice touch as well.
- Gluten free availability: For those who cannot consume gluten, you'll find a generous variety of genuinely tasty options at this bakery.
- Personable service: No matter how busy it gets, everyone here is friendly and generally lovely.
My only cons:
- I long for Cream of the Cakes to be able to expand their selection even more. I would so much rather support them over the big grocery stores when it comes to loaves of bread, bagels, donuts, and muffins, which they do not have (muffins on a rare occasion, but not usually).
- Related: space. It gets crowded quickly in such a small space. It's homey, and generally not too much of an issue as a customer, but ideally they should expand once it's possible!
Overall: 10/10 bakery. Seriously. Check them out. Try things you maybe wouldn't normally try, because Cream of the Cakes is the cream of the crop when it comes to bakeries.
The food was fantastic. They had a great twist on regular items. Like truffle powder on French fries. Yum yum. Prices were fair and they had a lot of options for vegan and gluten free.
Fantastic food (with some serious heat if you want it) and super friendly service. I absolutely love the red curry, pad Thai, and drunken noodles. They also make Celiac safe gluten free dishes that my wife comes back to time and time again. This place is a staple for us!
We LOVE Nautical Bowls Lakeville!! The staff is AMAZING and the bowls are incredible. We are so grateful to have a healthy, gluten-free, dairy-free option this side of the Twin Cities. We appreciate the fresh, all-natural and organic ingredients! Thank you Nautical Bowls Lakeville!
The best pho ever, large portions and great appetizers too. Staff is friendly and very accommodating when needing to order gluten free. I love the spring rolls too.
Small space and might be difficult for handicap, but the last two times i was here we sat in the corner and could put an infant carseat in the corner aisle, that works well.
Excellent waitressing - coffee gets topped off before we have an empty mug!
Food was great! (Wish they had a specials menu in print, i get forgetful when its just verbally shared or all the way at the entrance on the chalk board)
Amazing service for toddler - coloring supplies, free drink with meal, stickers on the way out! Her pancake meal was served as a smiley face pancake too! So fun!
One person in our group is mostly dairy free and gluten free, she was able to have choices here easily, focusing on hollandaise sauce instead of cheeses.
We've been here 3 or 4 times and each time I'm impressed with the food. I'm a sucker for anything covered in cheese sauce. Lots of gluten free options. Great margaritas and happy hour deals. Service is great and it's become our go-to for great Mexican food.
They advertise “gluten-sensitive” options. DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU ARE REMOTELY GLUTEN SENSITIVE!
I think the food tastes great here, but we cannot go back ever again. My oldest daughter is 7, we ordered the gluten free combo for her. By the way, it’s $18 for maybe a 12” pizza. We spent nearly $100 for our family of 5. This was our first time ever going to a restaurant with my daughters gluten issues, so I was very happy when they said that they have gluten “sensitive” options. By the time we got home, she was in the bathroom sitting by the toilet. White as a sheet. We had just finally gotten her stomach issues under control and we are navigating this new way of life. I find it absolutely shocking that a gluten-“sensitive” pizza can cost that much and be completely contaminated with gluten. My home is not even gluten-free and yet I am able to keep her away from eating it. I did call the restaurant, and was not offered any type of compensation just a sincere apology. I understand that their kitchen contains gluten, and there’s no way to 100% guarantee that there isn’t any gluten that has ever touched the pizza. But my daughter is not celiac, she just has a severe sensitivity to gluten. For $18 I expect that pizza to absolutely not contain any gluten. Given her reaction, there’s absolutely no way that that pizza was gluten-free.
Tried b52s for the first time on a busy Friday night. My husband who is very particular on his hamburgers was impressed with how well they cooked them and the quality. Said it on its very top list of great burger places. I am gluten free and had the buffalo chicken salad which was equally amazing. They had lots of selection for gluten-free options as well. The service was amazing. Will definitely be going back.
