My first ever experience at the coconut lagoon was certainly hyped up by many people that had eaten here before and after their Renos. I was pretty curious to try it, and considering the menu has such a diverse range of foods for gluten free, vegan and vegetarians alike, I was eager to have my birthday dinner here to accommodate all my friends dietary needs.
Unfortunately, coconut lagoon was bit of a sad experience. The service was ok, not overly friendly or helpful. We were a large group (7people), so I can understand it is harder to serve and have a more intimate dining experience with a group of this size.
I ordered the moonshine lassi, samosa, kerala fried chicken, butter lobster curry, and rice. I also tried some of my friends dishes, mushroom curry and chicken curry.
There unfortunately not only did none of the dishes wow me, some were not great at all. The samosas looked and tasted undercooked. The KFC chicken was low on flavour. Even the tamarind sauce felt a bit weak and mild. However, my lobster curry was the biggest disappointment. Before even trying it, I could tell from the bowl that the lobster looked overcooked by the way it was curled into itself. I could barely cut it into it wuth a fork and knife. The taste was pretty bad, not fishy, but stale and overcooked. This was very clearly either frozen, or old fish. The curry sauce itself was very good and a delicious tomato onion base. However, considering the small bowl of curry with two small pieces of lobster was 39 dollars (not including the rice or other sides) I can’t say that it was remotely worth it.
I ordered medium spice, and it was not spicy at all. My friend who ordered mild spice said hers was way too spicy. Since spiciness is subjective, I won’t dock marks here.
I wouldn’t say I had the best experience at the coconut lagoon, but it wasn’t horrible. For the price and the type of fine dining they are aiming for, I would expect some more quality ingredients (especially fish/lobster) and a higher level of service/attentiveness, perhaps recommending sides with dishes or checking in on the table a few more times. I’ve had tastier South Indian food elsewhere, and will continue to dine there instead.
I will likely not be returning to coconut lagoon.
