We have been loyal fans of K38 for years. Throughout my pregnancy, Monday night Baja fish tacos were my ultimate craving — a true highlight of those months. In fact, I was enjoying K38 the night I went into labor, and it’s a special memory we’ve always cherished.
Because of that, we chose K38 to celebrate our daughter’s first birthday this week, wanting to honor the tradition. Unfortunately, I’m sad to say it was the worst restaurant experience I’ve had in a very long time.
First, I want to note that our server was wonderful — kind, apologetic, and doing her best to navigate the situation. None of this was her fault.
However, when I ordered my usual two grilled fish tacos on corn tortillas (no cheese) — something I’ve ordered countless times — our server informed us that as of that day, K38 would no longer allow substitutions for the Monday night fish tacos, meaning, no grilled fish.
Disappointed but understanding, I ordered another entrée that I knew was gluten free, again requesting no cheese. When the dish arrived, it had cheese all over it. I had to send it back, and by that point, feeling frustrated, I ordered the simplest thing I could think of — two ground beef tacos. They were just okay — nothing remarkable — and yet we were shocked to find they cost $16.
Over the years, what made K38 special was their willingness to accommodate allergies and dietary needs with care. That is no longer the case. It seems that flexibility and attention to customer needs have fallen by the wayside.
For anyone who is gluten-free, dairy-free, or has dietary restrictions, be warned: Monday Baja taco nights are no longer what they once were.
It truly breaks my heart to write this, but after years of loyalty, tonight left us feeling disappointed and unappreciated. We’ll be taking a break from K38 — at least for now.
