We visited Mama’s Fish House during our honeymoon, as it came highly recommended by multiple friends and family. I made reservations 5 months in advance and I’m glad I did. It far exceeded our expectations! The food was fantastic, many dishes were gluten free. and they were able to modify the salmon dish preparation with a local Hawaiian fish. The setting, decor, service, and scenery blew us away. It was entirely worth the 35 minute drive from Wailea and had been the best meal and dining experience we’ve had since arriving in Hawaii 7 days ago.

It's hard to write a review leaving only 4 stars for a place that is so beloved by many (as evidenced by the need to book reservations months in advance), but sometimes the hype really hurts a place like Mama's. We skipped the reservations and opted to walk-in for bar seating at lunch. Credit has to go to Mama's for the ambience and service. It was quite excellent. The staff and location were top notch, really capturing that retro "island" vibe. Bar staff, Tom and Jill were great. Drinks: Mai Tai and Espresso Martini were great. Would recommend to anyone. Food: overall my impression was that the food was good, but nothing was special. At nearly 70 dollars an entree, you are looking for that something extra. The seared ahi appetizer was good but unremarkable. The stuffed Kanpachi, a long standing menu item, was somewhat of a disappointment. However the our selection of the fresh catch (got the uku with caramelized onions, chili and avocado) was a bright spot and was quite good. Would also like to note that they were very accommodating of gluten-free diners. Verdict: 4/5. Go for the ambience, +/- on the food.
