We are staying at the Waipouli Beach Resort and were thrilled to discover this restaurant just steps away. We were able to get away from the kids for a night and leave them with our teenager for an adult dinner, but still be on the property. The location is fantastic, right on the beach, and the atmosphere is fun (though a bit loud). The food was great and the drinks were fun (the bartender made a delicious custom drink for me since all the drinks on the menu were so sweet). Igredients are local (fish, and vegetables, meat is not), fresh, and high quality. If I didn't have any dietary restrictions, that would be the end of my review and Oasis would certainly get five stars from me.
But, I have Celiac Disease and have to be careful to avoid gluten. I was looking forward to my experience because there was a special allergy menu and my server was very knowledgeable. I asked for the short ribs (without the sauce and fried rice made it gluten free) and the server suggested that I get the curry with the short ribs added instead because it would be a little dry without the sauce. I had actually be torn between the curry and the short ribs so this was perfect. When it came, I took a bite, delicious! Unfortunately, I had let my guard down and wasn't as careful to inspect my food as usual because they seemed to be set up for food allergies so well. It was only after that bite that I noticed there was a sauce on the short ribs. The server was asked about this, he took the plate to the chef to ask, and came back and let me know that, unfortunately, what I saw was indeed the sauce. Several members of the wait staff apologized profusely, another meal was brought out promptly, and I was assured that this was very out of character for their kitchen (which I believe). Unfortunately, the rest of the meal was ruined for me - the food was delicious, but I was no longer able to enjoy the time with my husband because I was worried about the illness that was certainly to come because of the mix-up. Additionally, I was told dessert would be on them for the mix up. We ended up not getting dessert, so I thought perhaps something else would be comped (my soup perhaps? a drink?). Unfortunately no. We paid the whole check and then I spent the entire night in and out of the bathroom paying for my meal another way.
I still gave the restaurant 4 stars because had I not had a food allergy, it would have been great, and I do believe that they are very prepared in general for dietary restrictions. I just had a rare negative experience, which I wanted to share for those who do have food allergies so that they are aware they this restaurant does have options, but that they also need to be vigilent lest my experience be repeated.
