DON'T GO IF YOU HAVE CELIAC DISEASE. We went to Shake Shack because it supposedly had gluten-free options, and it's hard to find places like that in the United States. So, after reading several blogs, we went there for our first meal in New York.
My partner is celiac, but I'm not, so we ordered individually to avoid confusion or cross-contamination of any kind.
We were aware that the US doesn't have any measures for celiac diets, so instead of ordering on the self-service tablet, my friend went to the counter to explain the situation to the staff, reassuring us several times that the message had been clear. In fact, the girl who served her told her she couldn't have the fries because they weren't gluten-free.
First, her "special" gluten-free order arrived. We could only eat on the street patio, and it was cold, so she started eating before the burger froze. Minutes later, I picked up my "normal" gluten-free order and saw that it was practically the same. First scare.
It didn't take us a minute to run to the counter to ask if it was really a gluten-free burger like we'd ordered, and the guy told us no, it was a burger with gluten. Second scare.
From then on, we were already worried because we didn't know how my friend's body was going to react. We asked if they had a bathroom, and they told us it was only for employees and directed us to a nearby Starbucks that had one for customers. They offered to call an ambulance (once again, it's clear that Americans don't know what celiac disease is), something we immediately rejected because it wouldn't be useless or very expensive.
They offered her a bottle of water for her inconvenience, but we demanded a refund for the food poisoning. They refunded us the burger but not the tip. By then, we were already on the alert, so we didn't want to dwell on it any longer and just wanted to find an effective solution.
The rest of the afternoon was undoubtedly a very bad experience for our first day in New York; it ruined our trip. I don't even want to imagine what would have happened if instead of eating a bite of the hamburger, my friend had eaten the whole hamburger.
