Taza is a surprising gem tucked away in a shopping center at southwest corner of Mountainview and Hayden Road. It’s locally run by Sondra and Nick. Sondra’s background is Eqyptian and the bountiful dishes she prepares reflect her extensive knowledge of the flavors of North Africa, Greece, the Middle East and the Mediterranean region. We stopped by, thinking that Arizona Restaurant Week had begun. We were a day early and were thrilled that the regular menu was still in service.
Our dishes were exceptional! The Mezza (appetizers) are varied and plentiful, including a selection of sharables. We tried the Mezza Board with garlicky humus, baba ganouj, feta chunks and a selection of tangy pickled vegetables. It was freshly prepared, salty, creamy, spicy, outstanding. The dish burst with the flavors of lemon, garlic, mint and smokiness. The salads were fresh and brimmed with herbs and a light, luscious dressing. (Nick and Sondra grow many of their own herbs.)
My husband ordered the gyro, an absolute winner. The French fries that accompanied it were like crispy clouds. The secret must be the healthy oleic oils they use. I ordered the Ful Wa Falafels. The chickpea fritters were hand-made, fluffy, and crispy. They were accompanied by ful medammes (pureed fava beans), house tahini, pickled turnips, warm pita, and house salad. Each dish was thoughtfully presented and well-portioned. Entrees also include salmon, chicken, beef and vegetarian options. The wine list is exceptional and diverse.
Sondra told us they are striving to participate in Scottsdale’s Blue movement by using oleic oils, healthy menu options and gluten free choices. The Blue Food Movement is an international initiative that aims to create sustainable, healthy, and equitable food systems which is one of the United Nations’ sustainable development goals.
We especially appreciated the personal greeting, the comfortable seating and the service. The ambience was gentle and cozy, including the décor, low noise level, soft music and immaculate surroundings. The space includes a lounge area with sofa, a bar and tables inside and outside.
Taza is not the typical gyro take-out joint with greasy fries. Taza is a first-class dining experience where you can relax, enjoy, savor and return again and again. We’re returning for restaurant week.
