If you like a restaurant that cares about it's customers, don't go to Zushi. Last Friday two of my friends booked a table for us for my birthday at Zushi Surry Hills. I love Japanese food and was excited to try it out but when it came to ordering we were all really let down by the management here and the restaurants inability to make even the slightest accomodation for a serious allergy. Since it was a special occasion, we decided to opt for the set menu however, my friend is allergic to prawns and one of the meals on the menu contained prawns. Seemed like a simple fix as most restaurant would make a quick adjustment but after asking if we could substitute the prawns on his meal with anything else on the menu we were told by management that it was policy that they would only allow alterations for gluten and dairy allergies but that for anything else the only option was to pay full price and give the prawns to myself or our other friend to eat or get a-la-carte. Given that it was a special occasion and my friend wasn't being difficult out of personal preference it was such a massive let down and put a huge damper on the night. You could tell that even some of their own staff thought this policy was ridiculous but the manager stood cold faced and wanted us to just shut up and order something else. The restaurant has now tried to back track on this by saying that they take allergies seriously and that their fryer risks cross-contamination but this was not mentioned once on the night and they even recommended he could get the full menu and just not eat the prawns so it definitely feels like this is a policy of convenience for the restaurant itself on a busy night more than anything else. I'm sure the food is lovely and the one cocktail we had was good but if you have any allergies at all or want to eat at a place that truly cares about it's customers I would highly recommend staying clear of this place. After this ordeal we went down the road to ITO instead who were incredible - accommodated his allergy right away and gave us multiple substitutions. The silver lining of this experience was being redirected to a better restaurant.
