I typically don’t like going out of my way to write a poor review but I’m hoping this will help others within the celiac community. I was very excited to go to brunch with my friends at Elephante yesterday. The restaurant was gorgeous on the inside and the food looked amazing. When the server asked if we had any questions, I took the opportunity to ask if they had any gluten free options. She stated that they had gluten free pasta and that all the sauces were gluten free, she also highly recommended the vodka pasta for the gluten free option. I ended up ordering the Vodka pasta with gluten free noodles and asked her to please mark it as an allergy since I have celiac disease. She assured me that she would inform the kitchen. Although the service was incredibly slow, the food took a very long time, and I waited an hour just to receive the latte I had ordered (which was terrible btw), I still was excited to try the food. Once we got the food, I confirmed with the food runner that it was gluten free. The flavor of the pasta was spectacular and I was very thrilled to find a new spot that I could get gluten free pasta at. Things quickly changed shortly after leaving the restaurant. I started to feel incredibly sick and have since been sick from a celiac attack. I fully understand and take responsibility that no matter what restaurant I go to, there’s always a risk of a reaction. That being said, this reaction is far beyond minor cross contamination. I have not been this sick from a gluten exposure in years. I’d hate for another person with celiac to come here and spend $50 on a pasta just to be sick in bed the next week. On top of that there was a $5 up charge for gluten free pasta which wasn’t stated on the menu nor did the server disclose that when I ordered. I hope moving forward this company will work harder on training kitchen staff to take more caution when preparing food for an allergy and/or inform the customer that they cannot accommodate if not. It’s so disheartening when restaurants don’t take this seriously. It’s simple things that can end up sending someone like myself to the ER. I’d definitely suggest avoiding this restaurant if you have food allergies until staff is better trained. Far too expensive to then be incredibly sick.
