ʻUlu & Kalo Bakery

We had a slice of the ‘ulu banana bread at Bean About Town, Kaimuki. When we asked if we could buy a loaf, she told us about the brick and mortar store in Chinatown. The baked goods are sold inside Po’ai, which is a coffee + other N/A drinks and handmade crafts by local vendors. It’s a cool place but we were there to buy loafs of the ‘ulu banana bread. This is hands down the best vegan gluten free banana bread! It’s fluffy, not dense like most GF baked goods and it’s so flavorful without being overly sweet. The chocolate chip cookies are crunchy (not a fan of soft, chewy cookies) and delicious! We bought a lot as gifts to give to our non-vegan relatives to try.

This is not a bakery, this is literally a lucite display case the size of medium Amazon box inside of a coffee shop. This shouldn't even be listed as a standalone business - they're simply a supplier of baked goods for a coffee shop. I spent $10 on Uber to drive here because I have Celiac disease and needed a gluten-free meal and saw this listed as a gluten-free bakery online. I called ahead and it went straight to voicemail so I figured they were busy with customers. I arrived and they had a single bag of a 6 pack of cookies and two "muffins" for sale. That's it. It was 1:30 PM, how are they already sold out? Even if it was full, 4 options - 1 type of bread, mini muffins, 1 type of cookie and 1 type of brownie is hardly a "bakery." The staff of the coffee shop, Pono Potions, went to "check the freezer" and said there was only the same cookies and muffins back there. The drinks you see in people's photos aren't even from this supplier, they're made by the coffee shop that they supply their baked goods to. Visited September 2024
