We usually go to Arcade Coffee & Food, but decided to try somewhere new while in Huddersfield for an appointment at Wonder of Wellness (biological dentist). We arrived early and popped into Northern Tea House — and we’re so glad we did!
I had the gluten-free brownie which was absolutely fantastic: gooey, rich, and just the right amount of indulgent. My friend had a meringue — soft in the middle, crumbly on the outside — exactly how we like it. I also ordered a pot of tea, which was huge and easily enough for two.
There’s no dedicated parking, but we found a nearby street and paid around £3 for 1–2 hours. Might be better parking if you scout around a bit.
The café has table service, which was a lovely surprise. There were people working on laptops and others catching up — it gave the place a nice energy. The high ceilings and warm atmosphere made it feel open and welcoming. People were constantly coming in, which is always a good sign.
We’d definitely come back next time we’re in town!
Had a lovely fried egg, mushroom and bacon sandwich on white gluten free bread for my lunch today with a cappuccino and gluten free muffin following a busy Sunday morning. The sandwich was delicious 😋 the coffee wonderful as always. The staff were really helpful, nothing was too much trouble and all made me feel comfortable asking for help when needed. Finding a place that has helpful staff, who cater for dietary requirements, is accessible for mobility reasons and is a safe space when on your own is difficult to find these days in my opinion. A big thank you to all the Merrie England staff at New Hey Road.

All three of us are coeliac and Villa Farm can accommodate. The food was tasty, eggs Benedict. The shop also has GF food, pies, scones etc and I found some GF black pudding! Nice!
