I fell in love with both the neighborhood and the restaurant. Their food is so good, and I can order almost anything I like due to the gluten free friendly substitutions. Instead of breaded chickun they grilled my soy curls unbreaded, substituted their house patty that has gluten for a Beyond burger, and served me both on GF buns. I was ecstatic!!! A restaurant where I can enjoy Plant-Based Comfort Food, then enjoy the fantastic nearby shops (I’ll share in upcoming posts) is everything my heart desires. 🥰 FYI: I caution anyone with Celiac’s disease that cross contamination is possible, and the fryer/grill are shared. Gluten Free Fried Pickles: This was the #1 reason I wanted to eat here. Yes, their menu is amazing, but I wasn’t sure I could enjoy much even with a gluten free bun as an option. However, fried pickles have long been a favorite that I haven’t enjoyed in almost a decade, and this is the first restaurant I’ve seen that has them. They were so good, I would order them, even if they didn’t have anything else I could eat. But, thankfully, they do! I had these as a side for the Buffalo Ranch Chickun, specifically prepared to be gluten friendly, per my request. It was absolutely delicious, and I cannot wait to eat it again! I'm also looking forward to another Black Cherry Tarragon Stubborn Soda because it was delicious. Murray Hillbilly has a laid-back atmosphere with books to read and games to play while you wait for your food. There’s even a small assortment of items to buy including t-shirts, hand-crafted hats, and a variety of eco-friendly items. I had to try on the crochet hats. They were absolutely adorable, and for those who don’t know I used to not be able to wear hats because I had too much hair. 😆 I loved that each one was different not just in color but in style, and it was neat to see how they each looked on me. Perhaps next time I’ll leave with one.

First off, always exceptional service, no matter who is running the register. They seem excited to be at work, happy to share their knowledge of the menu and work hard to make sure exactly what you want. Parking can be an issue, so if you’re meeting someone you may want to show up a little early because there will be parking, but it may not be right in front or behind the storefront. Don’t let that scare you, there is plenty of parking in that area, just not in front of The King. But you really want to know about the food: Plantains – really good but a very small portion for an appetizer but the sauce with it is AMAZING. Fried Cheese - bigger portion but served with the same amazing sauce. Rice bowl - rice bowls are similar to the sandwiches, just without the bread. So if you’re gluten-free, rice bowls are a good option. Pork sandwich - this is what they do best, juicy marinated pork, serve with pickled onions, and fresh bread is an absolute fantastic sandwich. I don’t know why I don’t head over to Chancho King more, well I do know because it is not near my work anymore. When I have time and don’t mind driving a little bit, The King is where to go

I’ll admit that the day I visited, I was in a rush. I specifically came in to order the Cuban sandwich, which was an old favorite before becoming vegan and later gluten free. The atmosphere was lovely, and the human who prepared my food was wonderful. I could see sitting at the bar having a leisurely meal with friends or solo while reading/working or chatting with the staff. (If I hadn’t been in a rush I would have stayed to chat.) That said, I will definitely visit again when I have more time and try some other offerings. I loved that they have gluten free bread available, but most of the sandwiches have wheat meat style slices. Unfortunately, this was the case with my Cuban, but I will say that for maybe the 5th time in the 8 years I’ve been gluten free I said screw it. I got the sandwich on the gluten free bread (because I may walk a little on the wild side, but I’m not reckless as I knew more than that and I’d definitely feel it later). I had the sandwich hot pressed, and I split it with Stephen. It was delicious and tasted very much like I remembered a Cuban tasting. However, I would rather stick to the truly gluten free options so I probably won’t get it again. My side was the potato salad, which was delicious, but spicy so I could only eat a few bites. However, Stephen devoured it along with the 1/2 a Cuban. The black cherry limeade I had was very good. Looking at the menu, I didn’t ask about the thot dogs, but my guess is they’re probably also wheat meat. Of the sandwiches, it looks like I could get 3/5 of them on gluten bread otherwise as is, so I’ll give them a try. There are quite a few smoothies and juices, but I tend to go places for the variety of gluten free vegan options. I’ll be back next I’m in town, and I’ll stay a while this time while I try something new. (If I was not also gluten free this would be an amazing option.) FYI: While I am gluten free by choice due to Hashimoto’s disease, it’s not much of a choice because without it I have insomnia (and I preferring sleeping). Cross contamination does not impact me personally, but be aware that this is not a gluten free establishment if you have Celiac’s disease.

We had to find a place to stop and eat lunch after being on the road all morning and this was the first place that we found. Our family eats gluten free and we’ve found it a bit trickier to find grilled options in the south. The entire staff there is so kind. Our service was great and they didn’t seem annoyed by my kids who were a little antsy from being in the car so long. The food was okay. The portions are pretty small but we liked what we ordered. The fries weren’t hot but everything else seemed fresh. The waitress was even kind enough to offer us suggestions on what to order on the menu so it was more cost effective which we appreciated. The lighting is pretty dim and you can tell it’s an older restaurant but overall, it was clean and we were relieved to have found it and we were able to feed everyone without complaints. We would stop in again.
