As a vegetarian visiting St. John's I was bit concerned about food selections for myself but Nook and Cannery was such a delight. The vibes were immaculate and the food was incredible. They offer many ways to adjust meals to suit vegetarians, vegans and gluten-free folks. My favourite meal during my trip!
A MUST for anyone needing gluten-free options. With a dedicated gluten free deep fryer, we ordered GF seafood platter (with the best scallops and shrimp I've ever eaten in my life), GF fish and chips for my daughter (a huge piece of cod!), and started with GF deep fried calamari as well as an order of possibly the only GF crispy cod tongues in the province if not the country! With all of that plus a GF beer that I'd never tried before, Port Rexton Raspberry Sour (something that did not sound tempting but it was actually delicious, more beer-y than fruity), I'm surprised my family didn't have to roll me all the way home! STRONGLY recommended! 👍👍 But make sure you call to make reservations... We got turned away the first time we tried to go. 🤷‍♂️
Best Gluten Free Pizza in Canada! I've been to nearly every province in Canada and this was by far the most unique pizza, good size for GF, bbq sauce base, chicken with hot honey sauce! Great atmosphere, friendly service.
Mitch was our server and he was amazing! Great recommendations and just an all around nice guy.
Food here is amazing. If you’re gluten free they have one of the best gluten free crusts around.
Def come here. Prices are more than fair.
Such a quaint and quiet restaurant. Beautiful, calming decor. Relaxing atmosphere. Wonderful service from the staff, easy to follow direction for ordering. Tasty food, I had the gluten free pad Thai (indeed spicy friendly because I cannot tolerate spice and this dish was perfect). Absolutely would recommend!
Had breakfast here twice during our week in St. John's, and it was worth it! So many options, and the fact that they can serve most options gluten-free (i.e. on a gluten-free bagel) was great. Unfortunately, they do not have a dedicated deep-fryer, so I wasn't able to get any of the unhealthy stuff that everyone else had, but that's okay...I appreciated the fruit substitution for the hash browns!
I go here everytime I'm in town, which is a couple times a month for work, and I've never had a bad drink here. There's a huge variety of drinks hot and cold and they always have interesting seasonal drinks as well. I always get a sandwich with a gluten free bun when I'm here, my favourites are the pesto chicken and the cran-apple chicken sandwiches, the gluten free bun is very good, and doesn't fall apart like other gf breads tend to.
Eating at this restaurant was the best dining experience I've had in St John's. The food is good, the price is good, and the service was exceptional. Very highly recommend for gluten free eaters.
Located close to the harbour allowing for a nice view, this restaurant serves nice food. They offer vegetarian options and Gluten-free ones (GF on request). You won't have to wait long for your food and get a free miso soup while waiting. It's a nice place to eat while exploring St. John's.
Went to this place on Saturday for some later eats. Extremely impressed with the entertainment, service, and food. I did not eat a lot, I do like that they have a lot of gluten free options. The atmosphere here is fun and inviting. Definitely recommend for late eats and entertainment.
We had an excellent meal at Pi. The service by Hanya was great. The gluten free crust was unique and clearly made from scratch. It was quite good. Unique pizzas in a place with a great vibe.
There's a gluten free version of most everything on the menu. Penne as a gf pasta, all of their sauces are gf, and most of their toppings. It's very good to not feel limited for choices.
Excellent music by Ron Kelly, great menu options and service on a Friday night in May. Consistent friendly welcome from Chico when he only sees us from out of town a few times a year. Food was delicious. Scallops, spinach salad and fish and chips with sweet potato fries. 3 salad options, lots of fish and shellfish and gluten free options on dinner menu.
Great service and prices. Huge gluten free selection offered and were extremely careful in every step to make sure my food was safe from the others. Even bagged my to-go bag first so that we wouldn't mix them up at the table. Will go back for sure
I haven't even ate the food yet but I just wanted to leave a comment about the customer service. I have celiac disease so I called to ask about their gluten free options. I spoke to Nicki who I have to say was more than helpful. She told me they have a fryer that is designated for gluten sensitivity and talked me through some of their options. She was super friendly and understanding and gave me her name so when I called back to place my order I could talk to her. When I got off the phone I honestly felt like I had just finished talking to a friend. I have never had such exceptional service, especially when it comes to ordering gluten free. Probably the best service I've had ever. Thank you Nicki for your help and understanding, it was greatly appreciated and you definitely deserve a raise for incredible service!!
Usually the service is great.I have celeacs disease and I'm not able to get anything from a fast food restaurant but subway serves gluten free selections.which is great for me
We love going to Jack Astor's. There's something for everyone from our picky eater, to our vegetarian to our celiac. Candace is the best but I might be biased!
Lovely restaurant with a delicious gluten-free burger (the Amelia burger, with a GF bun) and the best bacon-wrapped scallops (also gluten free) I've ever had. The server (Kim) was very helpful and seemed knowledgeable about celiac and concerns about the potential risk of cross-contamination with wheat flour. Strongly recommended! 👍👍🍔 🤤
Had seafood & vegetable tempura, seasonal nigiri & sushi assortment, Spanish wine and blueberry mojito at Basho. Everything was quite nice, particularly nigiri and the blueberry mojito. Their sushi rolls were good but I have had better at another restaurant in the Avalon area. A friend who had surf n’ turf & pan seared seasonal white fish confirmed that they were both great. (They looked great too).
A good thing about Basho is that you can get gluten free appetisers, mains and desserts.
Ambiance of the restaurant is amiable and the staff is not bad either.
We had a wonderful dining experience. Husband is Celiac and the chef made accommodations for him. I had lamb stew and baked brie with apples. Stew broth was rich and flavourful. The brie was out of this world good. Husband had an avocado salad with 3 scallops. Espresso creme brie and Pavlova for dessert. The view was like dinner theatre. We watched a supply vessel take on new crew. We shall return!
Wide selection of gluten free options and alternatives that can be offered; I believe only 3 or so menu items they said couldn't. Our server (Brianna?) Absolute gem and very cautious about making sure it was celiac friendly. Been 24 hours, no gluten reaction.
Gluten-free fish and chips. Cooked in a dedicated fryer. And the fish is crisp and delicious. The rice flour pushes away the moisture and creates a very tasty piece of fish. The serving size was right, not a mountain of fries on a monster slab of fish. They respect food quality and their patrons. Local cider on tap. We shall return!
I had a wonderful experience at this restaurant located within the Delta Hotel in St John's. The staff are very friendly, the atmosphere is open yet cozy and there were meal options that suited my gluten free preferences. I was lucky enough to enjoy a 1.5 lbs steamed lobster with vegetables before there were no longer any available. It was steamed perfectly and the vegetables were seasoned just right. Breakfast the next morning included an egg white omelet which also hit the spot and fueled me for my journey to Cape Spear. I highly recommend this restaurant if you're visiting St John's. One more thing: try the gluten free carrot cake. You won't regret it!
Definitely not the experience we were expecting. It has been awhile since we were at Saltwater - we were last there in 2013 at the old location and it was excellent. It was a very different experience this time.
Service was extremely slow, especially given that there were only a few other tables that were occupied. Just over an hour before we got the one appetizer that we shared between 2 of us. Our mains left a lot to be desired. The cod was very undercooked and the salmon was just “fine”. This was after witnessing multiple dishes going to wrong tables over and over, and then when ours finally arrived the server announced our gluten free salmon dish (we are not gluten free).
The whole evening felt very chaotic and disorganized even though it did not seem busy at all.
Our server was very kind and apologetic, she did it take the cod off of our bill.
Overall, it was very disappointing and hopefully just a very “off” night for the staff/restaurant.
A friend and I stayed in the rooms upstairs, and after a long day of traveling from Vancouver, decided to head down to the bar after dropping stuff off in our room.
I'm so glad we did!
I had potato skins and the chicken wings. They were very tasty, and Gluten-free! I also had a fair amount of wine. :D
The man behind the bar that night was attentive and kind (I think he even laughed at one of my jokes= very kind). As he grew up in the area, he also had a lot of fantastic recommendations.
Some words about Blair: "Not only is Blair really smart, but he's also super kind and generous. I've heard him referred to as 'saintly' and I wouldn't argue."
I would suggest trying whatever drink/cocktail special they have when you're there. They're concoction wizards!
For a few other nights, we had Ian serving us. He was also kind and attentive, and withstood friendly roasting quite well. I looked forward to our evenings downstairs at Magnum & Steins. Other staff members, and especially the manager, Kelly, really made us feel like family. It was so lovely, and they're a major part of why I can't wait to head back to St. John's. I could probably write a novel, but I'll settle for this short story. ❤️
