We had a great meal at the Engine Room. It was a low key Sunday evening for us. I loved my burger and the gluten free (gf) bun was great. My partner got the fish and chips and said they were delicious too.
Rio Salado has great food and much of it is gluten free. The chips are made in a dedicated fryer. My daughter has celiac and traveling is always stressful but not this time!
Son recently became gluten free and was looking for restaurant in the area that had some choices. We had BLT's and sweet potato fries. They were fantastic and would never know bread was GF. Fantastic customer service! Inside seating was very clean with a welcoming atmosphere. Will definitely come again when back in this area!
The oysters were so delicious and fresh. Gluten free scallops were flavorful. Lobster ravioli was amazing. We had a beautiful table overlooking the water.
We travel over an hour and a half (one way) to eat here. I’m Italian and GF and this food is amazing! My daughters are GF too and we all love this place! We have tried the entire menu and love everything. The chicken parm is the best I’ve ever had, you can’t even tell it’s GF and my daughters love the chicken Alfredo. The marinara sauce is so fresh you can’t even tell taste it. The staff is always excellent too. Parking lot is across the street from the Olde Mistick shops and Mystic Aquarium near the highway.
Gluten-free eaters, beware.
I have Celiac Disease. I can’t have gluten, full stop. When I walked into Red 36, I saw a sign on the wall identifying not only the 9 major food allergies, but also the safe handling practices a kitchen should follow for each one. Great! This is a sign that tells people with intolerances that we will be taken care of here.
Once seated, I told the waitress about my intolerance, and she immediately brought me a gluten-free menu. Another good sign. I ordered the gluten-free tuna burger, which (according to the gluten-free menu) is supposed to omit the bun, fries, and anything else containing gluten. When my plate came out with fries, I knew something was off. I asked the waitress, and she apologized, confirmed that the fries were not gluten-free and offered to bring me a side salad instead. Separately, I started eating the tuna, but was surprised to find (buried beneath the fish and a pile of coleslaw) crispy egg noodles. I stopped eating and again asked the waitress if my order was gluten free. She returned to the kitchen and informed me that, (1) the crispy noodles were not gluten free, (2) despite having apparently put “gluten free” on my order, the whole meal was not gluten free, (3) the same thing happened at the table next to ours, despite having notified the kitchen accordingly. So, having unknowingly eaten gluten, I now have to wait out a week or more of painful symptoms of my Celiac Disease.
I expect a lot more from restaurants that purport to exercise care for people with food allergies. It’s one thing if a kitchen is not equipped to cook according to dietary restrictions—I can manage my expectations. It is quite another when a restaurant is equipped to safely serve people with intolerances, communicates this to the patrons, and then fails to do so twice in a matter of an hour. There’s a lot of trust I have to put into restaurants, and I regret doing so in this instance.
I’m beyond grateful that my intolerance doesn’t send me into anaphylaxis. I hope that, wherever the breakdown happened between ordering and serving, it gets resolved before other folks with food intolerances get sick.
TL;DR gluten free diners, proceed with caution.
Firstly I love the decor here. It’s so cute and fun but still plenty of open space and seating lending towards practicality as well. I got two kinds of bagged tea (including London fog which is my favorite) and I ordered a small custom blend of loose leaf tea. The order forms for tea mixes are convenient to use and they got my tea ready quickly even though they were fairly busy. Lots of beautiful and gluten free macaroons. Also smelled so nice in the shop.
Oh my goodness I wish I could eat here everyday!! We visited here and I got the everything but the omelette and it was so delicious!!! I have a gluten allergy and they did a great job insuring I didn’t get sick!!! A smaller restaurant but definitely worth it! Beautiful view as well :) can’t wait for my next visit!
Asian cuisine that is allergen minded! Had a Keto/Gluten Free menu that was developed alongside a nutritionist. Food was incredible! Outdoor seating was awesome and beautifully decorated.
We stayed across the street & decided to try it instead of the “other” pizza place in Mystic. Our server Jessica was awesome & shared that it had been in the Hallmark movie “Mystic Christmas.” We had a white pizza, a bootlegger pizza & a 1/2 & 1/2 topping gluten-free pizza. If you have to do GF this one will make you happy!
I'm vegan and gluten free, and when I'm traveling it can be hard to find good and reasonably priced options. This place was amazing! Great selection of choices, most of the menu is vegan and gluten free or can be easily made gluten free, very reasonable prices, and absolutely delicious. I wish they were closer to where I live, I'd go there often!
What a fantastic experience. We headed over on a whim after a nice afternoon at the Aquarium. There were no reservations available for the dining room but we snagged seats at the bar where the full menu is also available. We enjoyed two dozen happy hour oysters and some delicious beet deviled eggs as an appetizer. The Bartenders were just the right level of attentiveness and remembered that I have Celiacs after one discussion. As mains we had the Fluke and my BF had a small serving of the squid ink spaghetti. For dessert we shared a pavlova. Everything was perfectly prepared & plated beautifully. 10/10 Recommend.
OMG the food here is amazing to say the least. we got lobster bisque, the teriyaki buns, and the lobster ravioli all soooo good. we also got an alaska rainbow roll, also good but the other food was definitely the star of the show! The staff is beyond sweet! we got the flourless choc tart and mango sorbet for dessert. the cake was so good, a great option if you’re gluten free. id pass on the sorbet though it didn’t have a lot of flavor. overall amazing, will definitely be back!
Service was excellent at our table! The bar was a little busy so it took us a little time to get our drinks prior to getting seated, but on a Friday night it’s great that the place was so full!!! The food was absolutely delicious and our server/waitress was so awesome. I have a gluten allergy and she was very knowledgeable about what I could or could not have and did not make me feel like a weirdo for asking. She was sweet and attentive, and the food was incredible. I got the special which was remarkable! Scallops over a short rib truffle risotto with asparagus; it was INSANELY TASTY! We will definitely be going back for another date night. Highly recommend!
Locals know ... The Mill is home to some of the area's best food. Add Masa to the top of the list. Pretty much everything is made in house, down to the mustard. Today we split the bacon egg cheese and the sausage egg cheese both on focaccia. Freash delicious food and such nice people. From the homemade pico de gallo to the service, such a great find. Can't wait to go back, dinner is next. Everything but the empanadas can be made gluten free.
stopped in for lunch with a friend, informed the server that I have Celiac and cannot have any gluten and was told they could not accommodate us at all. not even just eggs and bacon on a separate grill, apparently their kitchen is so dirty nothing is safe at this place. We ended up going across the parking lot to Andiamo, where they can make almost their whole menu gluten free.
Gnocchi dish my husband ordered was very good. So few gluten-free options, Chef massacred his/ her adaptation to gluten-free. Made me suspect. Can’t say that I have ever been before any where.
Don’t think we will be back. So many other restaurants.
I ordered gluten free pizza and they gave me regular. I was halfway through when I realized! Please be more careful guys.
(Updating to a 4 star because they are friendly and haven’t made a mistake since. And the food is awesome. But please still be careful!)
There is so much homemade goodness on their menu that half the time I can’t decide what I want first! I gravitate toward soup, which is always fantastic! They have fresh gluten-free pasta, too. Lots of options for all kinds of eaters - well done, Pasta Fresca! ❤️
Let's start off with apps, the bacon wrapped scallops were quite delicious; especially with that citrus honey maple mustard, it was the perfect blend of sweet and salty.
We also got the spinach and artichoke dip with chips; the dip was very sour cream forward and underseasoned. We added salt and it definitely evened things out.
My daughter got the cheese flatbread and said it was very good and my son got the Mac & Cheese, I can't say how either of those were as a person with Celiac I couldn't taste them.
For my main entree I got the Grilled Scallop Platter, the scallops were cooked beautifully but the Risotto was underseasoned and a tad underdone. I didn't pick up any hint of truffle oil, and the dish could have used a little acid to round it out. I squeezed some lemon on it and that boosted up the flavor, but I wish the truffle had shown through more.
My husband got the Haley Mansion Seafood Fra Diavlo in the white wine sauce. The shrimp were huge. He said the seafood was cooked perfectly and it was very flavorful, he was genuinely happy with his dish.
The downside was the flies, they were swarming our table like bees; at one point we had 4 of them buzzing around us. It was frustrating, obnoxious and quite honestly a bit gross with them landing on our food. We spent most of the time swatting them away. In one of the videos you can even see them flying around our plates.
Food was good, but be very careful if you have celiac. Unfortunately my wife, who has celiac, ordered the tacos tonight with the corn tortilla and specifically asked for GF and mentioned several times she has celiac. Despite that she was sick all night. They have “GF” options, but these days in the US every restaurant says they have GF options to get you in the door. Avoid if you have any allergies or celiac disease. We will never come back here.
I absolutely love this restaurant!! I have a gluten allergy and there are plenty of gluten free options. The wait staff is super friendly and the atmosphere is wonderful. Highly recommend
Deep fried breakfast burrito with soupy was bangin’. A bit pricey at $18 but it was a pretty good size. Glad to see they have sourdough and Gluten Free options as well.
For a Tuesday night the place was packed and they didn't have enough waitstaff to meet the demand, we sat for almost 30 minutes before someone took our drink order and over an hour before someone came to take our food order. The food was delicious I got the duck and scallops; the duck was so tender I could easily cut it with a butter knife. They were knowledgeable about the menu and used a soy alternative on my dish because of my Celiac Disease.
My girlfriend got the halibut and while I didn't try it because I wasn't sure of it's contents, it cut through like butter.
My girlfriends cocktail was VERY strong. Mine was delicious.
This has been my new go to pizza spot. I drive out of my way to make the trip. Buffalo chicken pizza and Spud have been my favorites. All of the pizza and sandwiches being on sourdough is HUGE for my gluten free wife.
It does normally come out on the doughy side (still great) but I now like to ask for it well done 🤌🏼.
Chicken Pesto sandwich was also very flavorful, tender, large, and reasonably priced.
Staff has always been very nice. The seating area has 2 TVs, a lounge area, and large open area for kids to hang and play. Great spot for families.
