Best local organic foods in Hilo. Lots of options for Vegan, gluten free, and dairy free. The people are down to earth and kind. If you eat meat, they are very conscious about where they get the meat. The best Kombucha I have ever had. From the homemade cultured hot sauce to the gluten free dairy free brownies and banana splits, they do it right. Weds night they have Kava, open mic and pizza made with ancient grain organic flour. Owners are also very cool. 😎
This place is amazing! There were gaming stations with all kinds of platforms like NES, Switch, and more. I ordered a gluten free vegan pizza, and my husband got a custom pizza and a salad, and we both got drinks. The food was SO GOOD. We took it to a park and ate outside. It was fresh, hot, and perfectly seasoned. Big portions as well! We had leftovers for midnight snacking. The cashier was super friendly and helpful too. It’s not cheap, but it was definitely worth the price. We played games while we waited for food, and it was really fun. Will absolutely come back on our next trip!
Easily one of, if not my favorite place to eat in Hilo. A beautiful atmosphere filled with flowers and joy. The food is extremely fresh and they go the extra mile to make sure they source high quality local, organic ingredients. This cafe is a Hilo Staple and a must visit. And don't forget to check out all of there wonderful gluten free, vegan desserts!!!
DO NOT ORDER GLUTEN FREE!
You will likely get "Glutened" as my daughter did.
Other than that... Normal people will enjoy good food in reasonable sized portions for a good price.
It's in an industrial area & building. The fried chicken is so good. Lightly battered & perfectly cooked. Everything on my plate was gluten-free. I felt very safe eating here.
This is just a grab and go place that is easily overlooked but the poke is BOMB and they easily accommodate food allergies. The staff even knew that there is gluten in imitation crab salad.
Great fish, priced as expected.
Gluten free soy sauce on hand! (Tamari) Celiac safety: I avoided the wasabi, rice and rolls, went straight for the sashimi. This always works at sushi restaurants for me.
Every meal at our table was delicious! The drinks unique and tasty. I had the gluten-free pink waffle, with the lactose free Gelato. I honestly could've ate 2. Will be back!
I LOVE THIS RESTAURANT. I HAVE CELIAC DISEASE AND THIS RESTAURANT DELIVERED. The waiter was literally the most knowledgeable person ever and took so many precautions just for me. He gave me the salad as my side and I took that shrimp with mashed potato. As you can see in the photo I finished all of it in 2 seconds. It was so good. I highly suggest you visit this restaurant one time. Atmosphere was beautiful. There was a person singing. It was just great dining.
I said I’m gluten free and asked for rice and grilled fish of the day. This was not a problem at all here. I had ono which was delicious, very fresh tasting. Sorry for the photo. I already started eating before I took the picture
My food was so clean and so good 😊 I ordered the veggie omelette and hash brown. I have celiac disease and I told them about my gluten allergies and they understood
First off, our server was great! She gave us local recommendations and had the best personality! My kids enjoyed the gluten free pancakes (the only ones we found on the island). I love the Pesto omelet. Good coffee and reasonably priced!
Start with the ribs as an appetizer, then have some more ribs for your meal.
If you enjoy food comas the pu pu platter, quarter loaf of rosemary bread, and guava BBQ babyback ribs left me in a wonderful state of existence.
Not too many gluten free options listed for my wife but the chicken risotto she did get was the best non fresh fish meal she said she had on our week+ on this island.
Amazing smoothies and food! Gluten free and vegan bakery options were absolutely delicious. The teenager growled like a hungry predator over his chocolate cake with vanilla icing....all gluten and dairy free!!
Absolutely amazing food, large portions for a very reasonable price, friendly staff. Gluten free items very clearly marked, just indicate upon ordering and they'll take care of it. Highly recommend!
A local suggested we try this place and we went for dinner. After about a 25 minute wait, we were seated by 6:30. Waitress was friendly and efficient although neither she nor the menu provided much guidance for gluten free options. I am not celiac so not as crucial for me but I think the boneless pork ribs had g or msg involved as these do not agree with my stomach. Sides are a choice of tossed salad, rice or macaroni. I think we all had rice and salad. Dishes ordered: stew- great; spicy siemin bowl with noodles- good; boneless ribs were flavorful but for thin cut meat it was very chewy, had lots of grizzle and much was cut off and left on the plate. Didn’t seem like ribs at all. 🙃Tall glasses of water were great. Prices are reasonable.
The outdoor seating was nice. The food was good but not amazing. The staff were super friendly and patient. They are not knowledgeable on dietary restrictions such as gluten and dairy. The ladies thought rice had gluten and didn't know soy sauce did.
Saucy dogs throws it down. So many options from vegan dogs ability to customize. Gluten free buns are no longer available, but they make it delicious without the bun. Plus quick and friendly service!
I was really looking forward to some local restaurants on our visit to Hawaii. We drove from Kona to Hilo on the day we went for our helicopter ride in Hilo. I purposefully booked the last flight of the day so we could have dinner somewhere in Hilo. Hilo is much less touristy and more focused on regular people living their daily lives. I struggled to find many restaurant options, but really loved what I read about Moon and Turtle so I was excited. It did not disappoint! Portions were good. It's a small menu so be prepared. Also the food is served family style so you can get a few different things for the table and share. They were as accommodating as they could be with the gluten free diets two of our party required. They even offered a dairy free option for one of my party too. I really loved the vibe here. The staff were SOOO happy and lovely to us. Everyone is very kind and sweet. I was very happy with our experience! They offered several different dessert options which were just as delicious!
After having an amazing meal at Kamana in Kona we were excited to repeat it in Hilo. Nope! Spider webs full of bugs at the tables along the wall near the lights and artwork. Host/waiter took our order and when we asked to make sure the dishes we wanted were gluten free he responded with "what else?" Also seemed put out when we asked about a drink menu and never asked about how spicy we wanted the food. After waiting 40+ minutes for our food the lady that brought it was friendlier but the food was not spicy at all (menu had spicy beside both dishes). Tasted like the correct flavours but bland compared to the same dishes we had in Kona. No drink refills offered, maybe they were short staffed? Not at all the kitchens fault but we wouldn't recommend this place to anyone, mostly because of the off putting waiter/host and bugs.
So grateful this spots exists. Fresh juices, smoothies and bowls. I am looking forward to eating the overnight oats with chia, honey, nuts and berries for breaky tomorrow. Gluten free options and vegan.
Delicious! Just go and enjoy. They also have menu items for Vegan and Gluten Free diners. Chef Dean really knows how to develop depth of flavor. A real surprise, should be on Diners, Drive Ins and Dives!
Gluten free granola and dairy free ice cream. The bowls are as pretty as they are delicious. The music is ono and will put you in a relaxong state of mind as you sip on the Hawaiian. The smoothies are fantastic. There may be only one person working when you come so please use your Aloha spirit and be patient. I do not think they serve sandwiches anymore.
Everything I have eaten here is delish. These guys have a super yummy eggplant parm sandwich and my new favorite: they have gluten-free pizza in da house, thank you!
This was the only place in town that was open late and I am soooooo grateful! The food was pretty good and they were able to work with my gluten free needs. They had karaoke going which was entertaining while we ate under the covered patio while it rained.
A flavor like no other with gluten free options, just ask! This is the second time I have been here and both times were excellent. Owner is super friendly and helpful if you need a recommendation.
I love the sushi here—soft and authentic (handmade by Japanese and Hawaiian chefs!). Sometimes, the wait is around 30 minutes, even just to order to go, and some of the waiters/waitresses speak little English—I should have learned more Japanese 😅—but they are accommodating and friendly! Also, it’s close to the Hilo Farmer’s Market, and many other shops. It also has gluten-and-dairy-free options. :)
