Surf is truly a gem in downtown Whitby. If you’re looking for a place to grab some excellent cocktails and amazing SoCal style small plates and shareables, this is where you wanna be.
They do a feature cocktail each week to keep it fresh (which you can find on their Insta) and everything they serve is made in-house (plus, their entire menu is 100% gluten free).
The staff are all super friendly and very knowledgeable when it comes to the drinks and food. If you come by in the summer they have a really beautiful back patio, too.
All around just a really amazing place that you should check out if you’re looking for a nice cocktail bar/restaurant in Durham.

Tonight was our first time at Beertown. As someone who is gluten and dairy free, I was excited to try their menu as they have a lot of options catering to my diet.
Unfortunately, a couple of things happened that did not make our experience a great one. First of all, I asked for a gluten free bun and my burger came with a wheat bun on it. I wouldn't have known if I had been alone, but everyone else at my table had the same bun which is how I knew it wasn't allergen-friendly.
My other friend asked for regular truffle fries and he was given vegan parm fries which he did not want. Our fries were also stone cold, which was especially disappointing once we actually got the right order.
The food we all had was just okay, and there was nothing special about it. It also took about 45 minutes for our food to arrive which was quite frustrating and there was no apology or consideration around this.
The drinks were good which we appreciated and the vibes were enjoyable, although very loud on a Friday evening - we often had to yell in order to hear one another.
Overall, I unfortunately won't be back. I'd maybe recommend this place for drinks only and if you are not in a rush.

My fiance and I recently hosted an Engagement Lunch at The Brock House. Coordinating with Maddison, one of the owners who is also the event coordinator, was incredibly easy as she was very efficient and quick to answer all of my questions.
We reserved the Nash room and it was a beautiful space that was able to easily accommodate our 35 guests without it feeling cramped. One of our guests uses a wheelchair and there was zero issue with her being able to get into the space, have her meal, and use the washroom.
The staff had helped set up and decorate everything before we got there, and it was exactly how we envisioned it. It made walking in feel that much more special. Everyone on the team was so kind and attentive, making sure our guests were taken care of and that the whole event ran smoothly.
The food was absolutely delicious, and we’ve been hearing nonstop compliments from our family and friends. The team was also very attuned to allergies and food intolerances, which was very much appreciated as we had a variety in our group, including gluten-free guests.
We truly couldn’t have asked for a better place to celebrate such an important day.
Huge thanks to everyone at The Brock House. You made our engagement lunch so memorable, and we’re really grateful. Highly recommend for any special occasion!

Went here on the recommendation of a friend. Italian restaurants frighten me a little, as I have a gluten allergy. But I needn't have been worried. The menu is clearly marked, and the staff very accommodating. I ended up having the best risotto of my life. My husband had pasta bolognese. He said it was fantastic.
