This is really disappointing writing this review as when we had been previously it was great. Today’s service and food was absolutely shocking to say the least.
After ordering breakfast and being told Eggs Benny is possible to be gluten free, the waitress 2 minutes before she brought my food told me I cannot have hollandaise as contains gluten and can swap for relish? Ok, not ideal.. this wasn’t even the worst part of it, the eggs on all of my family’s breakfasts are snotty and whites not cooked and bacon stone cold on soggy gf bread. I know GF bread isn’t ideal, it just needs to be toasted longer to actually resemble bread. Something a cafe should probably know and be able to cook to a decent standard.
My breakfast was probably the worst I’ve had in a long time and it’s sad I can’t trust to eat out and have a hot breakfast and eggs cooked properly.
The attitude from the ‘manager’ removing $2 and still trying to charge full price for breakfast, no apologies and also arguing with customers about your awful food is embarrassing. Taking responsibility and owning up when something isn’t right is what will get you return customers or making up for a mistake by offering alternatives before actually cooking it would be helpful.
If I could rate this cafe 0 I would. Go to single O in Surrey hills next time they are top tier.
The
Loved their vegetarian gluten free pizza. I will try other flavours soon. Service was great. I was told 10minutes and that’s exactly what I got, my pizza inn10 minutes.
My husband and I dined at The Ternary last night.
Food:
For entrees we chose the salt + pepper calamari with soya + chilli and the grilled king prawns with chimichurri. We requested the calamari to be made gluten free, and it was cooked to perfection, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, with a delightful sweet and saltiness from the dipping sauce. The serving was quite generous. The prawns were impressive, grilled with an aromatic char and complemented by the chimichurri sauce and sweet corn.
I chose the 2022 Alkoomi Grazing Collection Riesling from Frankland River, WA to start my evening and it was a refreshing wine to also complement the entrees.
They offer an Asian kitchen menu and grill kitchen menu, but we both decided to go with their grill menu.
For mains my husband chose the 300g scotch fillet, 150-day grain-fed black angus served with potatoes, spinach, and choice of sauce. Cooked to a flawless medium-rare, my husband enjoyed his steak with his choice of the rich mushroom sauce. I had the 500g balmain bugs, served with garlic, parsley, and lemon butter, accompanied by potatoes and spinach. The balmain bugs were succulent and the sweet flesh complemented the dipping sauce. We also had the chips + truffle aioli. I requested this to be made gluten free. The truffle aioli was divine!
I requested from our personal server to surprise me with a matching wine for my bugs. I was recommended the 2022 Shaw + Smith Sauvignon Blanc from Adelaide Hills, SA. This was a delightfully crisp and fresh wine that complemented my main dish.
At this point, we were quite full! We decided to share the apple creme brulee with cinnamon icecream for dessert. I requested this to be made gluten free. This light dessert was the perfect conclusion to our meal. The luscious creme brulee was infused with apple flavours and the aromatic cinnamon ice cream elevated this dish.
I couldn't resist trying one of their curated classic cocktails to match my dessert, the hot buttered rum. This warm cocktail was a blend of Captain Morgan spiced rum, butter, vanilla, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and all spice. This transported me straight to Europe during winter and the flavour was reminiscent of mulled wine. It was a warm and comforting drink to end the night.
Service:
Our amazing server was Ella. Her service was attentive, friendly, and professional. She checked up on us throughout the evening, but she was never intrusive. Ella kindly offered to take a photo of us which was very thoughtful. The bar staff, wait staff, and chefs were friendly and didn't mind me taking a few pictures and videos of the two open kitchens and bar area.
Atmosphere:
We arrived at 6pm and were initially a bit confused with the restaurant layout as the waiting area for dining was located past the bar with casual seating. We enjoyed the social and relaxed vibe of the restaurant and appreciated the trendy EDM playing during our entrees and mains, as this was during happy hour. Around 7pm the music changed to soft lounge music. We had a window seat and enjoyed been able to see the lights of Cockle Bay wharf and the dazzling views of the city skyline. The high ceilings, mood lighting, and open kitchens created an ambience of casual elegance.
Overall, The Ternary was a memorable dining experience. We dined with the Accor Plus discount, however the quality and quantity of the dishes were well worth the original price. Combined with attentive service and a relaxed atmosphere, The Ternary is undoubtedly a great place to dine in Darling Harbour.
Lovely restaurant, staying at the star just wanted to grab a bite and a couple of cocktails to use our hotel credit, lovely service and atmosphere. I’m coeliac and every staff member was incredibly knowledgable on what was gluten free, it’s a shame they don’t put it on their menu because their gf bread was lovely! I often don’t go to restaurants if they don’t state gf clearly on the menu so this was such a pleasant surprise, but should definitely consider advertising their gf options more!
Very friendly family environment, they took good care of my gluten free requirements and the food tasted fantastic! A little small on the portion sizes for a man and a bit pricy but overall very much enjoyed! Apparently the pita bread was to die for!
Pizza was decent. They have gluten free pizza bases which is great, but they taste a little bit bland, not fresh. Otherwise good selection of toppings and friendly staff.
We had such a great experience dining here! The Host and Hostess were so busy but still so friendly and welcoming; they were run off their feet but still so professional and helpful. The meals were very decent portions, so delicious and priced fairly too. One of pur party has coeliacs disease and found great tasty options too.
Celebrated my birthday here! Had the most amazing gluten free pasta and mocktail for the non drinking crew. Thanks to Tia for making the experience so lovely. She was a wonderful hostess.
Great seafood menu. We enjoyed the seafood pasta, seafood bouillabaisse and tuna with a lychee salsa. All the seafood was fresh, succulent and tasty. Chefs suggestions of matching wine very successful. Service most friendly and attentive. Trout ceviche starter very delicious. Catered well for our gluten free guest. Great view across the sparkling water. Saw glittering cruiser ship (across the bay) leave the harbour with much fanfare.
Some other guests had difficulty ordering and appreciating the menu and location. The owner handled the taxing situation with great finesse. Given the menu, superb location and friendly atmosphere, I guess some patron's cannot be pleased wherever they go!
Restaurant is not only dog friendly but staff and owner actually like dogs and were very welcoming to our Labrador. Also saw lots of families with children enjoying the evening. We had a very happy night out savouring Sydney's balmy summer weather and celebrating a birthday. Thoroughly recommended.
Disappointed at the huge extra cost for a gluten free base. This base was smaller and had less toppings but you pay $7.50 more???
The quality was very average. An allergy should be treated as a disease, a customer should not be penalised or have their order compromised due to factors the customer cannot control.
We celebrated a friend’s milestone birthday last week and WOW, everything was amazing! The food was delicious! (Catered to gluten free). Service was impeccable. We’ll be back
Great customer service and amazing coffee. They were very considerate of my gluten free requests for my children and were able to cater for it. Would recommend if you have gluten free intolerances.
For the amount you pay, I would suggest going to the buffet at the Crown. I eat foods that a gluten free and lactose free. Not many options at all! Foods aren't all labelled, the fresh seafood (oysters, crab, mussels and prawns) are gf. No gf crackers available and no dairy free milk to have a coffee. For the amount you pay, there should be a lot more options. Not worth it.
Always enjoy our morning coffees and eating here. The food is delicious, and the staff greet you with a warm welcome. A hidden gem in Pyrmont. Beautiful water views and great gluten-free options.
