Although the restaurant has a good vibe and the staff is friendly, I do not recommend this place for 3 reasons. First, we got their 12” pizzas unaware that they only come in gluten-free. It was the worst pizza crust I’ve ever had in my 50+ years, although the menu does mention it, It is not very clear and we missed it and our waitress did not confirm if we were OK with gluten-free pizza dough. I’m sure their 14” with regular pizza dough is better, but I cannot be the judge of that since we did not have it. Second, they brought our appetizer and salad after the pizzas. Third, their menu states they charge an automatic 20% gratuity for tables of 6 or more. Our table of 6 was actually charged 22% gratuity instead of 20%, so beware. There are many great food options in Maui, but I would stay clear of this restaurant for the reasons mentioned above.
First time visit with no reservations. Waited less than 10 minutes. The server was polite and knowledgeable and the food was super yummy. There were few gluten free options which was nice.
Hands down some of the best Italian food I have ever had - and we found it in Maui! The service was incredible, including the knowledge of our server on what my husband could eat that was gluten free. It is hard to find gluten free bread and Italian food that is good, but all of the food we ate at Matteo's was great.
I researched all of the different luaus in Maui and finally decided on this one. This was definitely worth the money. I'm gluten free (I have an intolerance) and the waiter was so careful about telling me what I could and couldn't have. There were only a few things I couldn't eat, and the rest was safe. I also did not experience any cross contamination symptoms, so I think this luau is a very safe option for those with food allergies. The food was also amazing! Probably our best meal since being in Maui. The waiter was kind and attentive, always being sure to fill up water glasses and explaining what every dish was. As the sun was setting, he even offered to take a photo of our family on my phone right in front of the ocean. The drinks were delicious and the line moved pretty quickly. Each table seats 8 people (maybe more with kids) so my family of 4 sat with 2 families of 2. The show was wonderful; full of humor, excellent music and dancing, and there was an explanation of each dance and how it relates to the Polynesian heritage. We were all so impressed and I 100% recommend this luau.
Lineage provided me with a dining experience I will never forget! I absolutely love Asian fusion spots with diverse menus, and this one did not disappoint. Our waiter was wonderful, taking the time to explain the menu in such great detail. Another highlight is that they offer vegan and gluten-free options, which I didn't see much of on the island.
We tried the crunchy cauliflower and the wagyu steak plate, which comes with two types of radish, bone marrow on the side, and rice. I was advised to mix everything together for the best flavor experience, and it was incredible!
I made reservations here when planning my trip, and I highly recommend doing the same, as they fill up quickly.
Just a quick note: they are closed on Sundays and Mondays, so make sure you visit between Tuesday and Saturday to experience this amazing spot.
Their filet is awesome. I get it medium rare, the plate it comes on is 500 degrees, so I butterfly filet my steak and flip the inside into the plate and slowly eat my still cooking steak with a bit of added salt from the outside edges to the center. Best steaks around. My wife is gluten free and likes the steak with chopped salad and sweet potato casserole.
Nothing is cheap in Maui. We had a couple of burgers and spent $50. They were good and they had gluten-free bread and were mindful about cross-contamination.
Across from the beach in Wailea
Humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa is a tricky word to say. That was our first impression of the restaurant located in the luxurious Grand Wailea, A Waldorf Astoria Resort. We guessed how to say it correctly, which led to an in-depth conversation about what we thought a Humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa was. Thankfully, our server, Harlod, could not only demonstrate the word's correct pronunciation but also took the time to show us a picture of a Humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa near the bathroom. This simple interaction was all it took for our children to imprint on Harold and set the course for us to have breakfast there every day that Harold worked for our entire stay.
The breakfast buffet was not just delicious, but also served in a serene and peaceful atmosphere. The calm surroundings were the perfect way to start the day, allowing us to relax and enjoy our meal. A few things that really stood out to us set Humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa apart and into a class of its own.
First, the food was a delightful adventure. We dined there enough times to explore all they had to offer, and each dish was a unique delight. The staff kept the buffet lines clean and stocked, ensuring that the hot food was always hot, and the cold food was always cold. The bakery items were fresh and undamaged from the humidity, and the separate area for gluten-free baked goods was a thoughtful touch, preventing cross-contamination and catering to a variety of dietary needs.
Second, the omelet station had a variety of fresh veggies, egg whites, goat cheese, and an amazing homemade salsa. We met two omelet chefs; both were incredibly kind to our children. Our son ordered egg omelets without any toppings or cheese every day. The chefs cooked the eggs the same way each time, which was especially important for our son.
Third, the staff, especially our server Harold, were not just calm and helpful, but also incredibly kind. Their warmth and understanding made our son, who historically would have tantrums in restaurants due to overstimulation, feel relaxed and eat well. We never felt rushed or pressured to do anything differently than what we were doing. All the staff we interacted with were accommodating and kind, making us feel truly valued as guests.
I would encourage anyone to try the Humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa’s breakfast buffet, especially those traveling with highly sensitive children. The calm environment and tranquil leisurely breakfast sets the tone for the day.
My husband and I both got the tacos and they were delicious! I also ordered a mocktail which was delightful, but almost the same price as an alcoholic drink. Restaurant accommodated my gluten allergy very well and the atmosphere was beautiful!
Looking for a quiet easy breakfast with excellent coffee we popped in. Was chilled bliss, gluten free folks you will be so happy! All sandwiches can be made with GF bread or wrap!
Staff were so lovely and accommodated all my concerns

The view from the food course on the hill is excellent. The food was great. The service was too notch. You can go formal or casual or somewhere in between. They have gluten free options and the cremebrulee was excellent and safe.
The service was miserable. The waiter disappeared early on and that was the trend of the night. We had to get up to find someone to help us multiple times. It was so bad. Also, one of our party members had a gluten allergy which was part of our reservation, and the server was like “I’ll take the drink order and come back and explain what you can order that’s gluten free.” Then proceeded to disappear for a long time and completely forgot they said that.
We waited an hour and 45 mins for our food and no one checked in on us and it was just awful. Several of our appetizers were lukewarm which makes me think the kitchen did everything right, and it just sat back there and that the server didn’t time things right at all. The food tasted good but just the worst service. Wouldn’t go back and can’t recommend. For how expensive that was, it was highly disappointing.
