Last Friday we went to eat at a restaurant with a person with celiac disease.
We ordered the gluten-free menu and the gluten-free menu (which are identified by a different color). We literally ordered, pointing to the gluten-free menu, "some gluten-free squid," another tapa, and a half-meal menu, "all gluten-free." When they brought us out, we started eating. We asked for gluten-free bread since they only had gluten-containing bread. At that point, they told us the squid had gluten (clearly realizing their mistake). They would replace it, saying it was "just the flour." We told him we had already eaten, and instead of apologizing, he added, "It's just that since you didn't insist, I didn't write down the gluten-free menu."
(Sorry? Do I have to say gluten-free 30 times? I asked for a gluten-free menu and menu, you brought it to me, I showed it to you, and I told you twice...)
We left without eating because people with celiac disease get sick quickly. When we went to pay for the damn squid, we were told that "sometimes people order for a family member who's coming later." Seriously. Where's the humility? A simple apology would have been enough. It's a huge mistake, but as a person, I understand it could happen to me too. What I CAN'T tolerate is the contempt they showed us, trying to blame us for their mistake.
08/15/2024: Since the response can't be answered, I'm editing this one as a response to the one given by the establishment. First of all, I'm sorry for not telling the whole truth and for not mentioning that, indeed, the only thing they didn't charge for was the squid. Regrettable. I hadn't mentioned the subject because I didn't state for the record that they didn't even have the courtesy of not charging for the Coca-Cola and the other tapa. Anyway. Secondly, I insist. We DID communicate that there was someone with celiac disease. We DID say we wanted EVERYTHING gluten-free. I don't care if other people "are interested in the menu because they have relatives with celiac disease." You shouldn't speculate. If I ask for gluten-free, they serve me gluten-free. You don't assume that "maybe I just asked in case another relative comes later." Do you realize what an absurd excuse that is? Oh, excuse me, it wasn't enough to order three gluten-free items. The problem was that we didn't order gluten-free bread. What a mistake we made... Well, look, I didn't ask for gluten-free bread at the beginning because I don't usually eat bread and I didn't feel like it. I didn't think they would use it with our choice. When we were served the other tapa (morcilla) and saw that it was accompanied by peppers the way it was, it occurred to me to ask for it to eat with that.
I assure you I can understand human error, what I don't understand is the arrogant attitude with which you are treating the issue. That final response you gave, that "not like you," leaves a lot to be desired, both as professionals and as people.
