The Root Cellar Cafe is a delightful restaurant in the heart of historic downtown San Marcos. Wonderfully decorated and featuring good, healthy comfort food, it is a popular downtown spot. We ordered the salmon and pasta carbonara. The exquisite salmon with balsamic glaze was served with pilaf, sautéed vegetables, and eggplant chips. The chips were sweet and my personal favorite. The pasta carbonara was also very good. A 16-oz beer was just $7 which was also very sweet. We ended with the gluten-free Tart and Snickerdoodle bread pudding. Absolutely delicious. I need to mention that the service was very good. Our server was a delight and very attentive. Highly recommend!
A go-to spot with amazing dishes, a variety of mimosas, and a relaxed vibe that keeps diners coming back for more.

The food and service is amazing. I have celiac and this is one place I feel I can truly enjoy a breakfast out. They are so careful and knowledgeable l.
Great food, always hot and fresh.
Only one negative and that would have to be the weak coffee.
I always look so forward to coming here when I visit San Marcos.

Came by for lunch as I was in town for a conference and was looking forward to the gluten free sandwiches that is mentioned in other reviews but to my surprise, when I asked about it, they said that they don’t “think” they have gluten free bread for today. As mostly a sandwich shop, to not carry a bread type that is on the menu is quite upsetting. I was really bummed as I was driving with excitement to have tomato basil(ok for a staple) with grilled cheese. No other recommendations was given, just “we don’t think” and silence. Had high expectations but maybe next time the experience will be better. Must note that the atmosphere inside is very nice and relaxing!!!
A charming spot with a cool community library vibe, perfect for grabbing a delicious chai and enjoying a cozy atmosphere.

Love this place. I can't drink coffee but their teas are always on point, especially the chai. The only place in town where I can get a gluten free muffin that doesn't make my throat swell up. I only wish they didn't run out so quickly! I'd buy a dozen at a time if they weren't so good freshly made. 🧁👌🏻
THE MOST UNBELIEVABLY UNPROFESSIONAL AND LAZY EMPLOYEE!!! The website said they had an herbal chai and gluten free pastries. It was around early Feb, maybe Feb 7. in the late morning or early afternoon. There was a female brunette staff member training a new female blonde. The blonde greeted me. I asked for the herbal chai. The brunette said they didn't have it anymore. I was bummed because that's why I took my time to drive there. I wanted her to know that the website still has it on the menu. She was obviously irritated by this and with an attitude said, "Well, we don't have it anymore." I didn't want my time to be completely wasted so I thought about getting a gluten free pastry. I have a medical condition, so I asked if they knew what the ingredients are. The brunette actually said to me, "I don't know, you have to DRIVE to the north location to find out." What an absurd response. A professional response would be, I don't know, let me call and find out, but to tell me I had to drive across town to find out? Your website even welcomes patrons to ask questions about the gluten free items. She embarrassed herself and your company. Because of her, I will never go there again, and will continue to tell people of the worse, most laughable customer service I've ever had in my entire life, unfortunately at your place of business because of this employee. I hope she doesn't represent how your company likes to treat people who want to spend thier precious time and hard earned money at your business.
Great restaurant Love the fact that they have gluten-free bread. We can go here and all of my family can get some food to eat and not have to worry about them not liking it. Especially with having young picky eaters. One of my kids and I get a large meal and share it while my husband and other child have their own meals and everybody seems happy and their tea is absolutely amazing sweet tea. Definitely one of our go-to places. Not only the fact that cinnabon is connected here we get dessert after we eat lunch or dinner. Can't wait till they take the plexiglass down so that the cashier could actually hear what we're saying a little clearer. Ingredients are always fresh and tasty.
I wish I knew the name of the girl who made my almond milk latte because it was so, SO good and I want to hire her to make them for me every day. The gluten free almond.... something... was also to die for. This coffee shop made me wish I visited San Marcos more often
A late-night drive-thru gem in San Marcos with unique, healthy options and amazing homemade corn tortillas that everyone raves about!

I've seen this restaurant many times, and always wanted to try it, but all in all eating there was a disappointment. I was hopeful when I saw items on the menu that were listed as gluten-free (actually flour free). I ordered the Hippie and my husband ordered the Fist Pump. Imagine my disappointment when my taco arrived with a flour tortilla 🫤. She explained to me as she set my taco in front of me that they were out of corn tortillas, hoped it was ok, and apologized. I said well, I ordered that taco bcuz I can't eat gluten and it was supposed to come on a corn tortilla. She offered to put the ingredients in a bowl. I said ok and asked for some chips or something else to go with it since I wasn't getting a tortilla. She gave us some chips and salsa which were good. I didn't really care for the converted taco in a bowl. We also ordered a pint of rice to share. We really liked the rice. We would have preferred if they would have told us up front that they didn't have any corn tortillas and if they had told us we most likely would have gone somewhere else. Overall, the food and the experience was disappointing because they weren't up front about being out of corn tortillas. Not sure how they can call themselves a "Tortilla Grill" and not have any corn tortillas.
This spot offers a relaxed vibe, stunning river views, and a diverse menu with seasonal options and refreshing mimosas for any meal of the day.

I've been to this location many times, and I've never had anything that wasn't delicious. My family has various dietary needs (gluten, dairy, etc) and they can accommodate all of us. This morning, we had brunch for my son's birthday. Riley was wonderful. She was very attentive, made sure the food was safe for those that couldn't have gluten, and was incredibly nice. My son has autism, and she made a point of talking with him and engaging in his interests to make him feel special. :)

Best dinner date restaurant in San Marcos, glad we tried the delicious shoestring chicken with local goat cheese and peach (gluten free). The courtyard is quite charming. Thank you!
Stated gluten free buns and burgers. But nothing was gluten free. Only reason I went there. So no beuno, had people meet me here cause I thought I could eat there. And nope!

First of all, I LOVE Danni (or is it Danny? Lol). She is the best barista! Every time I go in, even if I haven't been in months, she remembers me and my drink. She's the sweetest person, and I'd go back just to chat with her.
But it does help that the coffee is perfect every time. I always drink an almond milk latte with honey, and they always make it right. Plus, the coffee they use is lovely.
The place is adorable, too, especially if you want to sit and chat or study. It's relaxing and super comfortable. I love that they have indoor and outdoor seating.
They also have great food. I enjoy the breakfast tacos, and I love that they have gluten-free options.
I highly recommend this joint!
Quick service, great value, AND high quality! Gotta be the best Gluten-free breakfast in town. Fabulous ambiance, the music just right, warm and bright, Jesus served us right.
Favorite tacos are picadillo & avocado and bean & chorizo, on corn tortillas (gluten free) with red salsa.
They were rude in the past but the staff is friendlier.
Expect a fresh and high-quality experience with a diverse selection that makes it worth the splurge—don't miss the quinoa salad and million dollar potatoes!

This place was AMAZING. The freshness, options, and quantity of food. I was incredibly happy with my selection. They do have their sauces listed as gluten free or not. I would definitely suggest this to anyone even just interested in trying what poke is. You can add as much or as little as you like. A regular bowl that I could not finish for lunch was around $14. I cannot say enough how delicious this was
