As a vegetarian visiting St. John's I was bit concerned about food selections for myself but Nook and Cannery was such a delight. The vibes were immaculate and the food was incredible. They offer many ways to adjust meals to suit vegetarians, vegans and gluten-free folks. My favourite meal during my trip!
The staff was extremely friendly and provided consistent care. The food was wonderful, and they have Gluten Free/Celiac options. They are are able to sub alternatives if needed.
Would definitely go back
Mitch was our server and he was amazing! Great recommendations and just an all around nice guy.
Food here is amazing. If you’re gluten free they have one of the best gluten free crusts around.
Def come here. Prices are more than fair.
We love going to Jack Astor's. There's something for everyone from our picky eater, to our vegetarian to our celiac. Candace is the best but I might be biased!
Got some takeout, and staff were so helpful with helping to choose celiac-friendly options! Not only was the food great, but pricing was very reasonable. Would 100% eat there again.
The Keg Steakhouse + Bar in St. John’s, located at 127 Harbour Drive, offers a refined yet casual dining experience with stunning views of the harbor and Signal Hill from its second-story patio. The menu shines with perfectly aged, spice-rubbed steaks and succulent prime rib, complemented by fresh seafood and inventive sides like pistachio-crusted salmon. Recent diners on OpenTable (4.6/5 from 4470 reviews) praise the attentive, friendly staff—servers like Michelle and Neil stand out for their warmth and professionalism. The elegant ambiance, extensive wine list, and gluten-free options make it ideal for special occasions. However, some note high prices and occasional overcooked dishes. Despite minor hiccups, The Keg remains a top choice for a memorable meal in St. John’s vibrant downtown.
Didn't expect to be in St. John's but an emergency landing had us in town for a night. Went here before the airport and the atmosphere was super cool. All the food was good. Service was wonderful and Steven (of the namesake Bourbon Sour fame) even showed us the "Underbelly"- oldest room in St. John! I love that geeky stuff. To top it off, they have a gluten free fryer so I was able to have fried fish and sweet potato fries!!!
I go here everytime I'm in town, which is a couple times a month for work, and I've never had a bad drink here. There's a huge variety of drinks hot and cold and they always have interesting seasonal drinks as well. I always get a sandwich with a gluten free bun when I'm here, my favourites are the pesto chicken and the cran-apple chicken sandwiches, the gluten free bun is very good, and doesn't fall apart like other gf breads tend to.
Such an amazing place! We’re from out of town and this was an amazing date spot. The atmosphere was great, staff were lovely and very knowledgeable! They also had a lot of gluten free options or items on the menu that could be made gluten free. Everything was simple yet so tasty and the presentation was amazing.
This was my first experience, and I have to say— I was thoroughly impressed!
The service was exceptional. As someone with celiac, I appreciated how the staff reassured me about their careful handling of gluten-free options in the kitchen.
There were so many great gluten-free choices, and for once, I felt like a normal person ordering from the menu instead of being limited to just one or two options.
The food was fantastic and surprisingly well-priced. The beef tacos were absolutely incredible! I was also amazed to find that all the desserts were gluten-free, which is something I rarely encounter. We ended up getting two desserts, and both were beautifully presented and delicious!
My only critique is the music made it a tinsie bit hard for us to hear one another chatting.
Overall, the experience was outstanding, and we’ll definitely be back again and again!
Had breakfast here twice during our week in St. John's, and it was worth it! So many options, and the fact that they can serve most options gluten-free (i.e. on a gluten-free bagel) was great. Unfortunately, they do not have a dedicated deep-fryer, so I wasn't able to get any of the unhealthy stuff that everyone else had, but that's okay...I appreciated the fruit substitution for the hash browns!
Had a great time! There are many gluten-free options that you can choose from. The sandwiches and soup were very well made and fresh. The atmosphere was cozy with a lot of seating.
The food is decent, tasted good. They have a lot of Gluten Free Options including a chickpea roti. Our server was very good and all the staff was also. I was not too upset at the mandatory tip, but it is disappointing that some business owners think they're should be allowed to add an additional percentage.
I have no complaints except for owners being greeedy. I hope they pay they staff atleast minimum wage.
Be prepped to pay an automatic 18% tip for groups of 2 and more.
Blue on Water Restaurant
I visited Blue on my birthday and was treated to one of the finest meals I've had in years. It's rare for an entire meal to be excellent, but this was!
The appetizers (Scallops, arancini, beet and arugula salad) were all exceptional - thoughtfully plated, sumptuous and a perfect balance of flavours.
The mains (duck, chicken and salmon) were also delicious: seared or crusted on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside. Accompanying seasonal veg were also toothsome and simply prepared.
Desserts (gluten free almond cake and a chocolate entremet) were to-die-for and I don't even eat dessert usually. Pretty as a picture and layered with complementary elements.
Our server, Lyndon, and manager Emily provided stand-out service making our evening even more special.
I was intrigued by what I had read online about the Duke being able to provide gluten-free fish and chips, so I tried it out. They have a dedicated fryer for fries, and will pan fry the fish, to prevent cross-contamination. The server was willing to further modify my fish to also make it egg free, which I appreciated. The atmosphere was warm and cosy on a very rainy day. No regrets with my first pub visit in St. John’s!
Came for a girls night and was not the least bit disappointed!
Not only were the drinks on point, but the food was great too(especially for a celiac!)
The real star of the show though was our waiter Mihalis - he absolutely made our night and gave us the best dining experience I’ve ever had. Honestly, even if the food was crap, I would go back just for his amazing personality and super entertaining service!
I haven’t had that good of a ramen in a while! The veggies were fresh, the miso broth (which they make themselves!) super tasty, the portion was generous... AND they have gluten-free noodles folks!!! 🤩 Don’t know about you, but I’ll definitely visit this place again!
Located close to the harbour allowing for a nice view, this restaurant serves nice food. They offer vegetarian options and Gluten-free ones (GF on request). You won't have to wait long for your food and get a free miso soup while waiting. It's a nice place to eat while exploring St. John's.
We were told that there were gluten free options on the menu but waited half an hour to be told there weren’t really any. Waited another 15 to pay for our drinks and leav
Went to this place on Saturday for some later eats. Extremely impressed with the entertainment, service, and food. I did not eat a lot, I do like that they have a lot of gluten free options. The atmosphere here is fun and inviting. Definitely recommend for late eats and entertainment.
We had an excellent meal at Pi. The service by Hanya was great. The gluten free crust was unique and clearly made from scratch. It was quite good. Unique pizzas in a place with a great vibe.
The waiter we had was very nice and genuinely seemed to love his job. However, that is where the good stopped for me. My order which was pretty simple took over an hour to come out even though the restaurant was barely full. When it finally did come out, it was not correct. By the time my food came out, a whole family had already come, ordered, eaten, paid and left. More importantly, as a celiac I went to this restaurant because of their gluten free menu but can definitely say that the food here has left me feeling sick (perhaps because of cross contamination). Would not recommend this location.

An incredible business. As someone who is celiac (gluten free) I felt so reassured when picking out meats. The staff is so knowledgeable and patient. I cannot recommend this place enough! Great quality and taste. Always a hit.
I had a wonderful experience at this restaurant located within the Delta Hotel in St John's. The staff are very friendly, the atmosphere is open yet cozy and there were meal options that suited my gluten free preferences. I was lucky enough to enjoy a 1.5 lbs steamed lobster with vegetables before there were no longer any available. It was steamed perfectly and the vegetables were seasoned just right. Breakfast the next morning included an egg white omelet which also hit the spot and fueled me for my journey to Cape Spear. I highly recommend this restaurant if you're visiting St John's. One more thing: try the gluten free carrot cake. You won't regret it!
Definitely not the experience we were expecting. It has been awhile since we were at Saltwater - we were last there in 2013 at the old location and it was excellent. It was a very different experience this time.
Service was extremely slow, especially given that there were only a few other tables that were occupied. Just over an hour before we got the one appetizer that we shared between 2 of us. Our mains left a lot to be desired. The cod was very undercooked and the salmon was just “fine”. This was after witnessing multiple dishes going to wrong tables over and over, and then when ours finally arrived the server announced our gluten free salmon dish (we are not gluten free).
The whole evening felt very chaotic and disorganized even though it did not seem busy at all.
Our server was very kind and apologetic, she did it take the cod off of our bill.
Overall, it was very disappointing and hopefully just a very “off” night for the staff/restaurant.
A friend and I stayed in the rooms upstairs, and after a long day of traveling from Vancouver, decided to head down to the bar after dropping stuff off in our room.
I'm so glad we did!
I had potato skins and the chicken wings. They were very tasty, and Gluten-free! I also had a fair amount of wine. :D
The man behind the bar that night was attentive and kind (I think he even laughed at one of my jokes= very kind). As he grew up in the area, he also had a lot of fantastic recommendations.
Some words about Blair: "Not only is Blair really smart, but he's also super kind and generous. I've heard him referred to as 'saintly' and I wouldn't argue."
I would suggest trying whatever drink/cocktail special they have when you're there. They're concoction wizards!
For a few other nights, we had Ian serving us. He was also kind and attentive, and withstood friendly roasting quite well. I looked forward to our evenings downstairs at Magnum & Steins. Other staff members, and especially the manager, Kelly, really made us feel like family. It was so lovely, and they're a major part of why I can't wait to head back to St. John's. I could probably write a novel, but I'll settle for this short story. ❤️
My spouse and I were visiting Saint John's for 3 days and wanted to take in all the most famous tourist attractions. We were told it takes most visitors 2 hours to make their way through all the Rooms. We skimmed quite a lot of the exhibits and it still took us 6 hours.
We ended up going to the cafe for lunch as it was taking much longer than we expected to make our way through. The cafe is a licensed full-service restaurant with gluten-friendly and vegan options.
Our main criticism of this largely awesome museum/art gallery was that the World War 1 exhibit didn't have a content warning at the beginning of the exhibit. There are graphic images within the exhibit that I wish I hadn't seen, and firsthand accounts of death on the battlefield that I wouldn't want a child in my care to see.
