Now that I’ve traveled around New Mexico, I realize just how good La Cueva is. Well versed in Gluten-free and helpful ad our daughter had celiac. No nonsense service. They know what they are doing and happy answer questions. I have not had chile relleno in years and this did not disappoint. My 15 year old did not believe me that it is good, but loved the chile relleno here. Very flavorful. My son loved his chimichanga and our 22 year old had the huitlacoche (corn fungus) enchiladas. Great flavor. We had huitlacoche while living in Mexico and were converted.
Lots of cheese! Good but heavy. There is a lot of cheese on the food in NM. I love it but can’t eat this way everyday. 😂

Buffett lunch for nearly 100 people; fresh salad and hot dishes. Nicely done. Several gluten free options (host and others needed gluten free). The room we were in was quite beautiful, fresh, alive. Felt like we were outside in the sun, but we were inside.
Service staff were outstanding. Always close by without hovering. Quick service.
Food was pretty good.
However, the sopaipilla "walls" were quite thick. Almost like a slice of bread was flattened and deep fried. Not very enjoyable.
Overall, though, one of my better visits to El Pinto.

Very helpful staff to explain what food is gluten free. Great descriptions of everything is prepared. Gluten free menu. Gluten free bread, but it cannot be grilled or toasted due to cross contamination. Fries are also cross contaminated. Sad to write a bad review because the sopapillas here were delicious , fresh and hot but everything else was a big let down. Our waitress, although was very nice, thought we wanted gluten free because we said dairy free and without discussing with us ordered our "burrito " with corn tortillas. We were excited to try the house-made flour tortillas that burritos are traditionally wrapped in and ordered a burrito as one of our two dishes. We were eating it regardless of it tasting really weird because they were super busy, we didn’t see our waitress while being very hungry and we don't typically send back food for just not being good to avoid waste. However, at some point we realized the tortillas were corn and not flour like indicated on the menu (and most burritos are) and were basically an unbaked corn enchilada instead of the burrito we selected. When we saw the waitress we checked in with her and she responded well and said made a mistake and will refund the burrito plate. However when she brought the check it wasn't fully refunded, just a credit. Turned out the manager wasn't going to refund it even though the waitress said she would and only offered a partial credit. I kindly but assertively requested a full refund and unlike the response of the waitress, the floor manager argued that we ate the "burrito" even when I explained we noticed it wasn't right but didn't know what the problem was and thought we just didn't like it. It was ofcourse after a 30 min wait for a table and it was hard to even pin down the waitress to check in about it. While the waitress and myself had a polite and calm interaction about it , I found the floor manager to be quite unprofessional, rude and condescending. He did refund fully in the end but even after doing so was very rude. Really weird to keep arguing that we ate and didn't say anything right away when they didnt serve us the burrito we ordered and until we realized it was a mistake we just thought it was a bac meal. I'd think it would be more important to a respectable restaurant to not have customers think they serve bad burritos. So I don't recommend this place even though the sopapillas and the local raw honey were good. Our other plate was better than the "burrito " but their chile sauces were kinda meh for us too. I recommend El Patio or Duran's Station instead.

My fiancé and I stopped here on a road-trip, she is a celiac so it was a pleasant surprise that they had a separate gluten free/celiac friendly menu. We both had the Steak Guadalajara with the ribeye instead of the sirloin and it was worth every penny. It was the best meal we’ve had in a restaurant in years and we were talking about how fantastic it was for days afterwards. The service was also very attentive and friendly, even though our server was still training he was an absolute gem and made a great experience even better. Delicious fresh food, creative use of spices and sauces. Not your run-of-the-mill Mexican restaurant. Several of the dishes happen to be vegan or gluten-free, and it was so wonderful to be offered something more upscale. We tried the mushroom sopecitos and the ceviche - both really tasty. For mains, we had the cauliflower rostizado which came with a yummy spicy sauce and the chicken mole which is served with blue corn tortillas. For dessert, a homemade nectarine and pink pepper sorbet was perfect. There are lots of tequila and mezcal cocktail choices, beers on tap, and a small but decent selection of wines. Place has a funky vibe, too!

Professional staff, darn good food. I am celiac, which means both that I experience a serious autoimmune reaction when exposed to even a tiny amount of gluten and also that eating at new (to me) restaurants can be a stressful ordeal. Carissa was incredibly gracious and efficient in identifying where cross contamination would be, and my meal was absolutely delicious. I experienced no adverse reaction, which speaks well of the organization and cleanliness of the kitchen as well.

We came to El Charro while staying the night in Carlsbad and it was amazing! The quesabirra tacos were some of the best I’ve ever had. The consommé was super flavorful as well. We will definitely come back here when we stop in Carlsbad again. I’ll make sure to take pictures next time, it looked so good that I ate it all before I could remember to take pictures. My boyfriend got the chile relleno plate and he also really liked it! The staff were super sweet and we liked the self serve sauce bar. A quaint little restaurant in the plaza area of Santa Fe. Compact seating with hard bench like booths. Small tables with chairs to make more room. Walls are beautifully decorated. Unisex bathroom, usually a line forms so be prepared. The food is decently good, our party of three ordered a variety of dishes. So, the food portions varied, such as the order of nachos which was just a handful of chips on a little plate, very small portion for a lunch dish. Now the blue corn tortilla enchiladas (3) plate was evenly portioned and not overly crowded, looked very appetizing.
I ordered the Santa Fe plate with x-mas style chile (red and green). The plate came with a tamale, enchilada, taco, beans, Spanish rice and posole. All squished on to a similar sized plate as the nachos were served on. The posole, instead should have been put into a separate bowl so the food wouldn't get all saturated with juice and become soggy. The taco was left off because one, no room and secondly, it was forgotten all together. Each plate comes with a sopapilla except for the nachos. Gluten free options are available but with the possibilities of obvious cross contamination should be expected but they will try and prepare it safely. I will return to try another dish.
