My sisters who are gluten free had their jaws to the floor with how many wonderful options they had here. Literally there jaws were to the floor. It was hard to have them eat after because they both had them stuck down there. It was a little embarrassing. The food was great! As someone who can eat gluten, you hardly missed it. Zack signing off.
Most items can be made gluten free.
Fries are cooked in a dedicated fryer.
Do not eat bbq sauce, malted mayo that comes with fries, or biscuit as those are not gluten free. All mayo on sandwiches is regular mayo.
Being celiac, I blame myself for believing that a Mac and Cheese place that offers a gluten free alternative could be for real. Don’t be fooled by their ‘GF available’ option, either the sauce was made with flour, or they reused the water to boil the pasta, but I had the worst gluten experience of my life. It was way beyond cross contamination. I agree that the food was delicious, but I would not risk it being are celiac or gluten intolerant, I regretted it deeply. The restaurant agreed to reimburse my plate and ‘look at the kitchen footage’… one week later and I am still waiting for the refund and never heard about their conclusion. I would not brand this place GF unless they change to a dedicated kitchen.
To end the night on an even lower note, although not the restaurant’s fault, our car got broken into, parked right outside the restaurant.
Came here for the first time today and was totally impressed by the quality of food and service. Finding tasty gluten-free bites can be challenging, but this spot is 10/10. Definitely recommend!
My favorite Habesha restaurant!! The food is so good! The lamb tibs, atakilt (cabbage) and shiro (puréed chickpeas) are my favorites. I would say skip the doro wot (it’s 2 chicken drumsticks, needed salt). The tibs portions are more generous than most Ethiopian restaurants.
The sambusas (samosa) were super fresh. The beef was great. The lentil ones were super spicy and too hot for me.
The service is impressive. Our waitress gifted us baklava. It was so fresh I could taste the rose water.
They have real injera that is gluten free but make sure you ask for it. And hands down Ethiopian food is the most delicious vegan/vegetarian food ever.
Every time we go the place is packed but we typically walk in without a reservation. The inside is lovely and there is outdoor seating in the back.
I’ve eaten at 4+ different Ethiopian spots in Oakland so far, and this has been my favorite experience. Great gluten-free injera, kind service, and very yummy veggie combo platter. 👍
There are gluten free options for people not allergic or celiac. If you are very sensitive don't dine here unless you are content with salad. The staff was five stars for transparency, and not sending me home with six weeks of agony. Really appreciate it.
I’m still dreaming of the gluten free fudge brownie I got here like 2 months ago. The service was top notch and they are incredibly talented and thoughtful and offer a range of gluten free goodies. Highly recommend this place!
The unclear gluten designated dishes as clear lack of staff understanding - and more over making stuff up on the spot - is having me not come here anymore. A shame as I was a regular before these recent changes in menu and staff training.
A great breakfast place I've been going to for decades. Had lemon curd pancakes, so good! Others had catfish and eggs and lox scramble. We left nothing behind! They have excellent gluten free toast.
Reliable staple in my life. Fontell is a great host and member of the team. Such a great place for gluten free fries, gluten free wings, gluten free pizza, vegan Buffalo sauce is a must!
I've never been dissapointed coming here! If you love a good crusty sourdough like me, then you must try Arizmendi! I'll confess it's not the best SD loaf I've had but pretty close to it and only because the Bay Area has too many choices which make the SD competition stiff here. They do, however, make the best heavenly sourdough pizza on earth and offer a delicious daily vegetarian soup that will leave you with a very difficult choice to make.
As for the baked goodies, the almond flour brownie is the best brownie I've ever had and it's gluten free!?! But don't let that keep you from trying it...I couldn't't believe I actually found a GF item I like. Even my kids approve! Unfortunately, the Lakeshore location is the only one selling it but don't worry any pastry at Arizmendi is great. Croissants are flaky and buttery, cookies are chewy and fresh... You can't go wrong with Arizmendi on any given day.
I took my staff here for lunch. It was a top notch experience. Rosa, our server, was so amazing. She was very friendly, engaging and welcoming. The food was so flavorful and beautifully arranged on the plate. There were several vegetarian and gluten free options available. The atmosphere was a vibe, from the music to the decor. It's very obvious that a lot of thought and attention to detail went into creating this space!
Daaaaaaamnnnnn!!!! Can't wait to come back, so so good.
Lucy was the best waitress of all time, she hooked my wife up with some vanilla bean sweetness for her coffee.
Good mix of vegan and gluten free options.
I have a gluten allergy I ask about the tinga chicken and how they cooked it the woman was pretty rude that they cooked it all on the same grill and she couldn’t help me. I asked about the salad she had the same response so I couldn’t eat there. So I walked down to Subway Sandwich and they were so friendly. They change the gloves made sure I had a gluten free meal….. I’m very disappointed in Calavera they could’ve offered to cook my meal in a separate skillet and not on the grill. Plus the woman didn’t have to be so rude.
I LOVE this place! My roommates and I are obsessed with the nachos, their protein options never miss and it's all quality and generous quantity. I really love the fried Japanese sweet potato tacos & tostadas too, and the mushroom options are great for the soy-free/gluten-free crowd. I wish nothing but success for La Venganza and their yummy, plant-based delicious dishes, we will keep coming back!!
Great place to get a big breakfast for under $20. Gluten free crepes, pancakes and toast. Fresh food always. Super friendly flexible staff and owners (ie let me swap the ham on my Benedict for GF bread, no upcharge, never complain when I bring my own coffee). Great place to bring the kids (kid menu) and to WORK! Large open space with just the right amount of noise/activity to keep you on task).
BEST vegetarian bahn mi I’ve ever had. I have tried spicy lemongrass gluten and tofu mushroom, but I’m sure the curry bean curd is just as amazing. The service is also great, so sweet and patient even when there’s a long line. I’ve also never had to wait long for my foot even when it’s busy.
This is our neighborhood coffee shop, and it's great. You can order breakfast to go from the restaurant they're a part of, or eat at one of the the outside tables. They carry pastries, and quite a few gluten free ones. The reason for only giving 4 stars is that I used to only get their chai latte, which they make themselves and has previously been great always, but the last few times I've gotten them they've been very bitter and weird tasting.
I got a rice bowl with grilled tofu, they dont seem aware of gluten allergies/intolerance which is a bummer and makes eating anywhere at an airport difficult. My food was very good though and the grilled tofu actually had a lot of flavor. I give 3 stars because the rice bowl did not seem to come with all the toppings listed on the menu. And the “onions” are fried onions like you use for green bean casserole which are breaded/gluten. I picked them out even tho it was tedious and I looked foolish. Its not clear on the menu they come that way or i would have ordered my meal without them. I risked getting sick/stomach upset because I was so hungry. If you’re celiac avoid this place. I feel fine and the meal was hearty and tasty. I would eat there again now that i know what to avoid.
Not pleased with the French Toast at all. It was below average and the custard seemed extremely light. The bread seemed barely toasted. The banana was not fresh or near fresh. It's difficult to believe this meal was passed off to someone. I should have ordered the the gluten free french toast instead; it's typically consistent. Oakland's restaurant industry has become weaker and weaker while the food prices become more expensive; it's so sad and disheartening.
Love this place. Brunch is the best for the Brats and Eggs. They always have an interesting game brat option, and it is always delicious. The beer selection is great, and they have good gluten free food options for my wife.
We got the smoothie + green dragon sandwich on sourdough bread. It was very yummy and fresh. We also got the caprese panini with chicken on a gluten-free bagel and it was amazing - highly recommend!! the coffee was mid. i got an iced vanilla latte with soy milk, i think it would be better if you just got hot coffee here. the cashier was super nice and sweet!!!
The best food I had while in Oakland "bar" none. I'm just shocked that I found a place with legitimate Gluten Free options. Still shocked. Fish Tacos better than San Diego. Best grilled Brussels ever. Evening bartender works his butt off. You better tip this guy.
Great pizza! We had the gluten free crust which was tasty, and as good as any other gluten free crust I've had. Also loved that we could get a large pizza with gf crust, usually places only have 10 inch gf pizzas.

Look, all the food here is decent. Great variety, good lunch spot. They’re pretty much the only deli/lunch spot in a 5-7 block radius & they know it. You can get breakfast. The tuna salad’s good. The pre-packaged salads are freshly made & they’ve got beer/wine options for your after-work pick-up on the way home.
The pros:
• They have some gluten-free sandwich bread. (Important)
• The portions are generous.
• The ppl that work here remember regulars names. (Which is great as I’ve been coming here for 7 years now)
The only negative about coming here is Oakland’s rent prices are probably so insane that Sierra has to charge you a tooth & nail for basic lunch items. A peanut butter & jelly sandwich on gluten-free bread costs me $9.
A breakfast platter (2 scrambled eggs w/ cheese, bacon, gluten-free toast, potatoes) & an orange juice was like $24.
I’m from NYC, the land of bodegas aka corner stores where there’s a deli like this sometimes twice on the same block, & everything is super affordable. So even after living in Oakland for some time, I always shake my head leaving here feeling light in the wallet. It’s the only reason I can’t drop 5 stars. Because rent aside, if U live/work nearby, this is your go-to spot to get food in this relative food desert of a neighborhood so they can tack on a buck or two & you’ve gotta pony up.
But- for what you pay for, they really do try & hook it up with generous portions.

The food was delicious! Service was excellent! The women working were so lovely. The menu is fully vegan and vegetarian and the injera is naturally gluten free because it’s made with teff. We can’t wait to come back!
Food choices and flavors galore! The staff were all so friendly and helpful. Seating options inside the cafe or outside in their courtyard. Also, dog friendly! Vegetarian and gluten free and vegan choices a plenty. This place is a must.
Mela has a wonderfully warm and cozy atmosphere and really great service. Chef Adiam was so kind which somehow made our beef tibs and vegetarian platter taste even better. The platter was vibrant and the gingered cabbage and salad were just as delicious as the misir wat and yellow lentils. The standout was the vegan and gluten-free Tef Chocolate Cake, made with tef flour and layered with tasty Bavarian cream. I will be coming back for this dessert!
Perfectly quaint & absolutely authentic!
It’s nice to find a great restaurant with ethnic vibes and authentic dishes! I WILL be returning again!!
Leo, my server, kindly walked me through the menu and helped me make the best decision for my lifestyle and dietary restrictions (mostly vegetarian, citrus allergy, etc).
Ghimrmay Liyon, or “May” for short, served me a delicious piece of cake 🍰!! Yum! Tried the Teff (gluten free) cake 🍰.
Delicious 🤤
PSA: leftovers are just as good (if not better) because all the flavors saturate the food 🥘 and enhance the taste.
5/5 (will definitely be returning!)
Being in the fishbowl of a back room made it feel slightly like our birthday party was on display to the other patrons, but the food was fantastic, service was prompt, friendly, and went above and beyond for one member of the party with gluten intolerance. Well done!
These sandwiches are clearly made with TLC! I’m also gluten free and they were kind enough to make me a lettuce wrap sandwich. Service was great and you can tell that the people who work here take a lot of pride in what they do! 🫶🏼
My boyfriend is gluten/dairy free and we came here based on good ratings from the Find Me GF app. While he couldn’t have the donuts, we were mainly after brunch and the tofu scrambles were delicious! He had the Pepples scramble with avocado, and I had the Pesto scramble. Both come served with hash browns and sourdough toast, so we just left out the toast for him. I usually don’t love tofu but this dish was absolutely delicious! We are from out of town but will definitely stop back here if we’re in the area again 😄
had some delicious pupusas de queso con loroco with slaw--words cannot describe the comfort and joy you get from a single bite! food options for everyone--meat eaters and vegans, gluten-free, etc.--, prices are reasonnable & affordable, and the staff were lovely! 10/10 recommend
note: they are a cash-only business; they do not accept credit card payment.
