Let me start by saying I have Crohn's disease which has led to me needing a gluten free diet/lifestyle.
Pizza has been a rocky road ever since going gluten free because nothing has really been worth it. However, this pizza may single-handedly be the best gluten free pizza I've ever had. We helped a friend move into their new home this weekend in Portland and ordered Portland pie co for dinner after we were all done moving. It was the best decision ever.
My boyfriend and his friends are all gluten lovers - they got a garlic crust with cheese, pepperoni, caramelized onions, pineapple, and burnt ends and they all LOVED it. Bonus points for the side of hot honey that they drizzled over the pizza.
The two gluten free friends in the group (me included) got a pizza with half feta, pepperoni, and broccoli and half feta, pepperoni, caramelized onions, and green peppers. I am so sad my boyfriend and I live in Boston, because this would be a constant place we hit up for pizza. The pizza was nothing short of perfect and may just land as the best place for gluten free pizza in my heart.
My boyfriend rates the gluten pizza as a 9.5/10
I would rate the gluten free pizza as a 10/10 easily.
We can't wait to return to Portland for more pizza!
Well, 1st, we informed the waitresswe would be gluten free, due to celiac allergy.
Next, I wish we'd taken photos of our meal to showcase some nice touches and some so so touches.
Drinks were fun and creative.
The caprese salad small a size.
Fried green tomatoes, nice.
The ceaser salad with grilled salmon spot on.
The braised pork and polenta, nice flavors.
The gluten free wild mushroom Alfredo was more the serving size for an appetizer.
Flour less chocolate cake, scrumptious.
Kinda a mixed bag for some items.
3 stars
I really wanted to like this place, but the service we received was very poor. We sat for at least 10 minutes before anyone touched our table, and when they did it wasn’t our server and the woman wasn’t apologetic at all, gave a rude response when I told her no one had come by yet. Then the server did not apologize either when she finally came over. Didn’t touch our table for a long time after our food came (which also took SO LONG) and I had to flag her down for drink refills. Only giving three stars because they had a lot of gluten free options which I really appreciated.
This was my favorite place for pizza as we have gluten free and vegitarian needs in our home the last 3 times we have ordered it has gotten worse and worse this being the last time we spent 70 dollars for me my wife and daughter and everything we ordered was just completly terrible sad to say but this place has gone down hill fast
Great Place….
We had dinner here our first night Belfast and we loved it. The food, atmosphere, and service all excellent. Highly recommend.
Great gluten free (GR) options too. The pizza was so good.
Very friendly, knowledgeable staff and the food is AMAZING. They were able to accommodate gluten and dairy free meals for 2 people who are very strict about it. Props to the chef, they clearly understand flavor.
This is my all time favorite restaurant. In the last year I’ve found out that I can’t eat gluten but even before that I always thought their food was amazing. However, since I’ve become gluten free I’ve loved it even more. They have complimentary gluten free bread for the table that’s DELICIOUS (I even had my friend who isn’t gluten free say he loved it.) That paired with the peppered oil they put out with the bread, well I could eat that all day every day. Not to mention their gluten free pasta is amazing and I can’t even tell the difference. On top of all of that, every time I’ve dined here I’ve been welcomed with the best service. All the staff are always so kind and welcoming, and the atmosphere is unmatched. Finally, the pricing isn’t bad at all, especially considering inflation and the fact they make their food in house! I would highly, highly recommend dining here and it is absolutely my go to for any special occasion, or even if you’re just craving Italian!
I ordered a gluten free pizza and an order of fries take out. I have a gluten intolerance. When I went in to pick it up I asked if it was gluten free. 1 man said yes, the other said no. They offered to re make it for me. I went back to my car and waited. I went back in to get it and left. The fries were the same ones they cooked the first time and were cold and mushy. The pizza was fine but not worth the money spent or the trouble. I was also the only one in the restaurant at the time. My order for a small gluten free pizza was $26.99 and the ice cold fries $9.99 I also tipped them a couple bucks and there was a support local fee. Totaling $43.95. I contacted them to say something and was offered $5 back. That’s insulting. It’s hard enough eating gluten free with the inconvenience and the prices but then add in that they just didn’t care. I’ll never go back.
I wanted to rave about this place because they have gluten free items on the menu and it is hard to find an Italian restaurant that offers this. I was impressed that they offer gluten free bread for dipping and for the bruschetta appetizer, which I had. The bruschetta tasted good, however the bread was a little soggy. The salad that came with our meals was delicious and the highlight of the meal. Because they offered gluten free lasagna I decided to try that but I was very disappointed. There was hardly any meat in my serving, the sauce was meager and not very tasty and I wished I had ordered something else. My husband wasn't impressed with his entree, either. However, my brother-in-law loved his chicken alfredo so I would go again and order one of the other intriguing items that I thought about trying before giving up on this place.
Our waitress was very friendly and attentive to my gluten allergy. She went above and beyond to explain the products and options on the menu I could have. The pesto sauce was the best we’ve ever had and it did not disappoint! The whole staff was very friendly and the food presentation was fantastic.
Awesome quality, big selection of gluten free food. They even brought me gluten free dinner rolls, which is the first restaurant I've had dinner rolls at before the main meal. The gluten free pizza is top notch, definitely not a frozen premade, they seemed to have rolled it out like regular dough. Will stop in again when in the area!
gluten free pizza was delicious and had a nice time playing one of the bored games they had out ( labled that they were for customers to play ) but the server was clearly in a rush to get us out despite the place being completely empty besides us two she gave us the check and boxes wellst we were still eating and checked on us to get the check evey 5 or so minutes. such a shame as the food was lovely and the restaurant was beautiful. edit food ended up giving us both stomach issues.
Ordered a gluten free pepperoni pizza for takeout, (on Mondays the GF pizza is only 8 dollars). Honestly one of the best gluten free pizzas I've ever had. Super soft crust, great cheese and sauce. Highly recommend.
Tried the gluten free pasta and 5 cheese marinara with grilled chicken. The pasta was cooked perfectly, the chicken was juicy and tender, and our server asked if we wanted the salad without croutons. We had a little problem with an electronic gift card, hopefully will work next time.
100% plan on returning to ViA VECCHiA. I will be bringing a ring to propose to either the Lumache or the waiter. I can’t decide which was better.
All the cocktails were out of this world! Pasta (gluten free options (yay!)) was cooked perfectly. I want the bread and butter to be my best friend. And the beets small plate was the ideal appetizer to prime the palette.
Highly recommend, I will be telling all my friends who visit Portland.
We ate take out from your restaurant 3-17-25 we order 3 large Zuppa Toscana soups that were pure water no stock in the soup whatsoever, not even a whole potato slice between the 3 soups no kale or sausage just flavored water big disappointment also we ordered a gluten-free chicken Alfredo with very rubbery pasta and tough fatty chicken. Still cost me $80 bucks though. Very disappointing
I loved this place. We went during offseason. We had the combo where you get salad, pasta, and Pizza for a flat price but we asked for gluten free. It was all excellent. I would definitely go again. The servers were also great.
My family brought me here tonight for an early Mothers Day. My 1st time. My daughter had been here previously and was excited to see you offered Gluten Free options - I require them. We arrived at oir reservation time and were sat promptly. We had a wonderful gentleman for our server, very attentive and knowlegeable. We started with the mixed meats and cheese board and the ricotta stuffed eggplant for our table of five. I have to say, best eggplant dish I've ever had! For my entree I had the mixed seafood with red sauce over GF pasta (actually tasted like a wonderful fra diavolo sauce. ) was delicious. My daughter had the Lobster ravioli. Smelled ABSOLUTELY AMAZING - obviously that was a gluten containing dish but I couldn't help but wish they'd offered a deconstructed version over GF pasta. The gluten free chocolate torte was thankfully sweetened a bit, so much better than other, basically unsweetened GF tortes.
Wonderful dinner. Wonderful service. Will return.
Best gluten free crust hands down. Picture shows how hungry we were vs getting a photo right away. Seriously the crust is thin crispy and no gritty taste!
We drove down to Ogunquit for a little family day and allowed our daughter to pick out the restaurant. She chose Caffe Prego for the pizza, and let me tell you, we were not upset! I'm gluten free, our daughter is vegetarian. The wood fired pizza was delicious! Our brussel sprout appetizer was also incredible. The best part about the entire experience was the homemade gelato for dessert! Yumm!
The ambiance of the restaurant was inviting and the waitstaff congenial (though not 100% up on what dishes contain gluten). I ordered the duck with beans with carrots and kale. The duck fell off the bones. The beans were extremely(!) salty. My dessert, a chocolate mousse, had a slightly course and not creamy texture. I had really wanted to like this restaurant...
Absolutely loved the mocktails options recommended by Justin. Love the fact its locally sourced ingredients and they do have gluten options. We will definitely be back!
This is the best gluten free pizza I've ever had! This is actually a crust, and not a cracker wearing pizza as a hat. It is crispy and the outside and chewy on the inside and encrusted with cheesy bits of goodness.
This is not your normal gluten free takeout pizza crust. This is made by people, not machines.
Everything else about the pizza was great, but we don't need to talk about the everything else. No one seems to realize this little shop has the best, most unique, and delicious gluten free crust on the seacoast. I drive by this place twice a day and never stopped until recently. Don't be me. Don't speed on by.
Take my money, Dante's. Take it all.
Best gluten free pizza ever! I’ve been gluten intolerant for over 35 years so that says a lot. It was so good I had to ask the server if it really was gluten free. Staff was super friendly. Fun vibe to the place.
This is easily the best Italian restaurant around, and they have an incredible gluten free pasta option too! My whole family absolutely loves Maria’s, the food, service, and atmosphere are always perfect. I grew up going to Maria’s with my family (so I’ve been visiting for 20+ years) and I’ve never had a bad experience. We love the puttanesca, baked stuffed haddock, and ravioli but everything on the menu is excellent. The waitstaff are always so kind and attentive and the chef does an absolutely fantastic job!!! If you’re looking for Italian in Portland this is absolutely the place to go, you won’t find anything else like it.
Phenomenal! Service was excellent. The gluten free pasta is TERRIFIC. I got the penne al pollo and I have nothing negative to say about the dish. The portions are large, we got a small and still had leftovers. We will definitely return.
Did have a good experience at the Matterhorn Ski Bar. Our server was friendly and attentive and timed our appitizers and entrees perfectly so my wife and I didn't feel rushed. For those of your with gluten allergies like my wife and me, Matterhorn makes a phenomenal gluten free pizza plenty of fresh toppings and the dough was perfect soft with a crunch. The Matterhorn has a great ski log cabin atmosphere both cozy and energetic. Only downsides were hearing fron the bartender who would not make my wife another chocolate martini because it was too busy and the prices were a bit high but the food was good. A little over a $100 for drinks and food for two. Wouldn't mind going back again for the GF pizza 👍👍.

The food was fantastic! I have had many gluten free pizzas over the years and this was by far the best I’ve had. Crispy, light and delicious. My daughter and I shared a mushroom and pepperoni pizza and my husband had the regular margherita pizza. He loved it.
Excellent food and fabulous service. This place has one of the best red sauces I have ever had and I’m from Brooklyn! They have many gluten free offerings. Everything is fresh and homemade. Try the sausage and the Italian Egg Roll - it’s really a ricotta and spinach filled calzone. The drinks are fantastic, beautiful, and well priced. I had dinner at the bar and felt right at home because it’s in the ground floor of a 100 year old house. Beautiful wood ceiling with modern clean lines. Come alone or bring friends. Parking in the back.
I’ll admit, I’m not someone who eats for the sheer joy of it. For me, food is typically more about survival than savoring. But then, there are those rare, magical moments when a meal truly sweeps me off my feet—and this place absolutely delivered one of those experiences!
I first visited during a work lunch, and I’ve been completely obsessed ever since. The flavors were incredible—delicious is an understatement. I can’t stop talking about what I ordered, and in the past two weeks, I’ve recommended this spot to at least four people. It’s safe to say I’m hooked.
While the food is a bit on the pricey side, it’s *so* worth it. My only hope is that they expand their menu to include gluten-free buns or pizza dough in the future. That would truly make this place unbeatable!
Don't mind my blurry photos, I was a little rushed.
I never give a good review or a review at all if the restaurant does not exceed my expectations. The quality of the food, service, and atmosphere all play a huge role. A good wine list helps, too. More gluten-free, please like gluten-free bread. Ben, the server was excellent, genuine, and provided superb service! Ben is an asset to the restaurant! Atmosphere was excellent, with major attention to detail. Will come back!
Definitely recommended for gluten-free food lovers! Pizza and salad both were delicious. Service was super fast and staff was super friendly and helpful with gluten-free options.

If you have glutin issues (or even if you don't), this is a place to go. Massimo's bread is better than regular bread with gluten! Very good food, and a very good experience!
This place is always delicious, we’ve been coming here for years. We like it so much we often buy partially cooked pizzas to bring home (out of state). They also have gluten free options which is a big win if you need that.
John, the owner, is great. This place is a gem and their gluten free pizza is way better than most. Their regular pizza is spot on too!
Definitely worth the visit!!
