cute Japanese gluten free cafe
Loved their vege tempura noodles! Really fresh ingredients and clear but flavorful broth
They also have mochi, donuts, sushi rolls, onigiris to choose from
My girlfriend is a celiac and am so thankful they put effort and time in catering for my requirements. We had a wide variety of choices to choose from and the food came out amazing. Would definitely come again.
Fantastic service tonight! Our waitress was very friendly and knowledgable. Gluten free gnocchi available and if you fancy dessert, you can have (gluten free) Panna Cotta too!
Great knowledge of coeliacs. Will offer gluten free bread and ensure gluten free pasta is not cross contaminated when cooked in kitchen.
Amazing quality. Just be wary if ordering a drink, they do use “pasta” straws.
We went to Don Fred after a long day of work, and we couldn't have wanted a better place to go to than Don Fred.
Vegan, gluten free dining with a sumptuous Italian style and flavour.
The service was impeccable.
The food devine.
We could taste the love of food in EVERY bite.
If you're in Sydney, and even if you're travelling from interstate or overseas, this wonderful, intimate, plant based dining experience is a MUST for everyone .
Once dined, you'll be thinking of the next time you'll be back
Pros:
- Ingredients are amazing, both in quality and type.
- You can't go wrong with any of the pizzas: you'll love them, regardless of whether you're vegan or not (I am not).
- Amongst my top-3 pizza places in Sydney.
Cons:
- Not a pizza that holds well as a take-away.
- The only base alternative is gluten free.
- Desserts aren't great and cost a lot. I'd rather order more entrees (like the croquettes, which are awesome), or have dessert elsewhere.
- Seating is crowded and music is at a high volume --> Way too loud at peak hours. You won't be able to move, or talk to the person across the table.
- Service could be improved (there's none).

What an amazing place. Food was yummy and so fresh and tasty. Atmosphere was fun and playful. Service was amazing and our waitress knew her food and menu and helped us select foods.
Was also able to adjust for gluten free which was great. Highly recommend and we will definitely be back.
My wife is vegan and I like to join her when she wants to eat at vegan only places. Most places are pretty boring and gimmicky, especially around Newtown where it seems people just give 5 stars because they're excited that another vegan restaurant has opened, even if it's really bad (and there's plenty of bad ones...). But Golden Lotus is fantastic! Easily on par, if not better than most Asian restaurants I've been to! I now make it a habit to go there often and try something new each time.
Personally, I don't like the whole fake meat thing, plus it generally contains gluten, which I'm allergic to, so I stick with tofu dishes instead. They're not bad, it's just that if you're going to quit meat, then why bother with fake meat? Bothers me... Real vegan food doesn't need to contain fake meat. Real vegan food is just beautifully prepared plants with outstanding flavours, and there is plenty of that going around. The fake meat thing is a gimmick, and generally way over priced. I'll have real vegetables thanks.
I'm looking forward to coming back tonight! I wonder what I'll try next...
Everything is great if you don't have coeliac disease, I sent them a text message to book a table and ask if they could cater for a coeliac, they said YES.
So that YES was simply "I don't have the knowledge but let's give it a try", be aware that coeliac disease is not an allergy or intolerance, it is an autoimmune disease, so cross-contamination is no good for us either, it should be illegal in all restaurants.
Of course I got glutened and was sick for 5 days, apart from that, my small intestine will still be damaged, so no tries and more empathy.
I wrote them a message to let them know and they have left me in the dark.
I hope this review is of some use.
The place is always busy and sometimes you need to line up for few minutes or even wait for a table, but the food is really good and really good portions.
Sadly they don’t have much options for gluten free or dairy free. The price is ok
If I could give them more stars I would because OMG! Even if you are not a vegan this spot is absolutely to die for! My mom and I went for the first time today and got the curry with gluten free bread! Another amazing thing is the majority of the menu is gluten free or upon request can be gluten free which is such a perk! Adam the owner is so kind and the other staff were so sweet and attentive! They have amazing smoothies and other delicious food options….you bettaaaaa RUN not walk asap😋! Also the portions are very generous (could be 2 meals) and are filled with flavor! Definitely a spot we will be again!
The signature strawberry watermelon cake is refreshing at the right level of sweetness. It takes so much effort to make a beautiful cake. It is gluten free and I hope it can be both gluten fee and dairy free so that my boy can try it.
My friends and I had a wonderful dinner here on New Year's Eve. Nothing was too much trouble for the restaurant and they catered beautifully for our gluten-free and vegan guests, and the staff were very welcoming. The food was delicious. Thank you for a lovely evening, we will definitely be back!
My gf and I went and it was fabulous. We got the set menu and as a celiac, it was tremendous. For $55, the set menu is definitely worth the money, and they don’t even charge extra for gluten free pasta. The staff were welcoming and friendly, providing excellent service, to which a 20% tip felt justified.
Chose the restaurant as they had lots of GF options on the menu. Advised I was coeliac and waiter confirmed everything would be gluten free. Half way through the set menu I was vomiting. Waiter apologised as he’d forgotten to tell the chef about my dietery requirements. As compensation I was offered a glass of house wine! Said I probably shouldn’t be charged for the set menu meal given I had thrown it back up and it wasn’t what I ordered. Was offered a glass of complimentary house wine when we’d bought a nice bottle (also thrown up) wasn’t appropriate compensation for being poisoned and ruining a Friday night out with friends. Waiter was stressed and said Manager wouldn’t allow it but he personally would pay for my meal. He was a young guy and we said we didn’t want him paying personally and could we see the manager. Manager refused to see us and the waiter was clearly scared of his manager. Our bottle of wine was deducted but sure the waiter had it taken out of his wages and I paid $88 for a meal I threw up. Didn’t push the payment for the meal as I didn’t want the waiter to lose his job. Cruel management, poorly trained waiters, don’t go if you have allergies, left with an empty stomach, sore throat and a terrible dining experience feeling worried about the waiter. Manager needs to train their staff, be accountable and lead and serve with compassion.
Incredible food. Really good communication (I’m coeliac and they asked all the right questions). Friendly staff and great atmosphere. Easiest 5 star I’ve ever given.
Love the fusion between Japanese and Mexican! The miso salmon taco was delicious and unique. The tacos shell is definitely contributing to this fusion. They offer gluten free option which is great!
Lovely staff who really care about the food they're preparing. Always fast and efficient. They offer gluten free bases and have ample on street parking on the side streets.
Advertised as having gluten free options but they share frying oil and don’t wipe down the plate that other gluten containing food is cooked on - avoid if coeliac! This was kindly communicated by the server but think it should be more explicit that the ‘gluten free’ options on the menu aren’t actually gluten free. We ate elsewhere.
This place is AMAZING that it is even better than places I visited in the heart of Istanbul! 100% authentic!! I am visiting from Melbourne with my friend and she took me here for an authentic Turkish cuisine and she wasn't wrong! She wanted me to try the grills but what blew my mind was the stuffed vegetables! Home made with love ❤️ The meats were also very juicey and tender and cooked to perfection! I even took it home re-heated it and it was still very juicey and delicious! Very fresh foods! I am coeliac though and I've let them know I am gluten free and although they went above and beyond and out of their way the stuffed vegetables had bulgur which is not GF so please be extra cautious with allergies guys as coeliac is a very serious disease!!
Great affordable thai options especially during the 11-4pm lunch special. Ordered the Pad Thai and Massamun Beef curry. Was very flavorful which can be a bit overpowering for some. Overall great experience and was able to cater for our dietary requirements by being gluten free!
Every dish was delicious and staff were very kind when catering for vegan / vegetarian / gluten free options all on the same table, sharing the same dishes. Great atmosphere and surprisingly quiet even when very busy.
One of my favourite restaurants in Newtown. The most consistent restaurant around. Great portion sizes, gluten free options, kind staff. Probably been here about 30+ times 😆
If you see this restaurant but you don't walk in, you don't know what you're missing! They have a very wide variety of food to choose from, vegan, vegetarian, gluten free and soft juicy meat dumplings, how thoughtful 🥹🥹🥹Low prices and high quality food! It is my favorite restaurant on enmore road! If you're here for the first time, you can't go wrong with the deep fried eggplant , Mongolian series, and small pork soupy dumplings! And a $10 cocktail to go with it! So enjoyable!
Went in tonight (Saturday night) and ordered a gluten free burrito. Fred was super accommodating and took lots of care with my dietary requirement— so sweet and considerate. Big portions too. Thanks so much Fred!
Such a VIBE – and the pasta is next level!
Had the best experience at Patzizi Café in Newtown! The atmosphere is seriously vibing—laid-back, welcoming, and full of character. As an Italian, I do not say this lightly: the pasta was absolutely fantastic.
My mum ordered the seafood pasta and was so happy to find out they cater for coeliacs—such a bonus! The variety of seafood and generous portions were spot on, and the flavours were rich and authentic. Amazing value for money, especially considering the quality.
I had the tomato gnocchi and all I can say is: WOW WOW WOW. Perfectly soft, handmade, pillowy gnocchi with a sauce that tasted like it came straight from Nonna’s kitchen.
The staff were absolutely lovely, attentive without being overbearing, and clearly passionate about good food and service.
Would 100% recommend—can’t wait to come back!
LAZY LUNCH REVIEW
Being a lifelong vegan, I’ve not had much experience with Japanese food, as it’s traditionally quite meat centric. To further complicate matters, I’m gluten, chilli and edamame sensitive…argh!
However, our eldest son has been encouraging us to try his favourite restaurant of its type, Kimusabi Sushi
in Newtown.
Knowing Peter’s other eatery, Vandal Sydney, and his fabulous grocery store, Greens Super Market we had no doubt of Kimusabi’s high quality offerings. I just wasn’t sure if my allergies could be catered for adequately.
How wrong was I you ask? About as wrong as could be and more! Our lazy lunch there last weekend was out of this world. The food was simply sensational, the service was second to none and the atmosphere was just lovely.
To top it off, our little rescued K9 son, Charlie, was welcomed in the alfresco section. Plus he was spoiled for attention by our gorgeous wait staff.
Speaking of the wait staff, I must mention the lengths they went to, in order to find suitable dishes that I would enjoy and not regret later.
The whole experience was wonderful and we cannot recommend Kimusabi highly enough. We will be back at the first opportunity, with bells on and a big appetite.

So much wisdom and knowledge shared by the staff at Ojas over nourishing, tasty and easily digestible food which embraces Ayurvedic principles. A very unique restaurant dining experience that’s good for the soul, mind and gut! Highly recommended for anyone with sensitive guts, dietary restrictions such as gluten free and vegetarians.
I ordered the Stir fry pork neck rice (korean). Good gluten free options here. The pork neck tasted good but was too spicy for my boy. Hope there are more gluten free options and the portion can be bigger.
This place has a reputation and stood the test of time for a reason.
In the sea of hipster American style burger chains these guys do real quality Aussie burgers, like the ones we grew up with. And gosh damn do they do that well 😋😋😋
They have great vego and gluten free options too.
My understanding of this place is that they do have GF food, however all of it is cross contaminated and not safe for coeliacs. Hope this helps a coeliac out, I wouldn’t pick this place for a safe thai option.
Great Turkish restaurant located along the liveliness of Enmore Rd.
FOOD: Great selection of truly yummy gluten free food. They also have lots of vegan and vegetarian options which is lovely. From dips, beads, stuffed vegetables, diced meats etc.
STAFF: Lovely, attentive, albeit seemingly less used to busyness (I'm assuming staff will get their head around it in time).
ACCESSIBILITY: Some (but very limited) paid street parking available. A couple of places out the front, means you could potentially go there with your dog. Wheelchair access through the place and to the bathrooms would prove tricky.
OVERALL: Would recommend as is and rave about if you had better gf bread options.
Personal note: PLEASE GET GLUTEN FREE TURKISH BREAD, IT'S AVAILABLE EVERYWHERE, DOESN'T COST MUCH, FREEZES REALLY WELL...because I appreciate getting it fresh, may result in throwing it out, if no one gf comes in that day. Charging more for average gf bread feels crazy when a few minutes from your restaurant they sell amazing gluten free wraps, Turkish bread and good gf bread.
We had a great evening at Stinking Bishops last week. The selection of cheeses of course was amazing but the rest of the food was also delicious.
The servers were welcoming, knowledgeable and friendly.
The ladies made sure I had enough gluten free crackers to go with the cheese and charcuterie.
I would recommend this place if you're looking for top notch food, service and wine in a comfortable and cozy setting.
