My sisters who are gluten free had their jaws to the floor with how many wonderful options they had here. Literally there jaws were to the floor. It was hard to have them eat after because they both had them stuck down there. It was a little embarrassing. The food was great! As someone who can eat gluten, you hardly missed it. Zack signing off.
Being celiac, I blame myself for believing that a Mac and Cheese place that offers a gluten free alternative could be for real. Don’t be fooled by their ‘GF available’ option, either the sauce was made with flour, or they reused the water to boil the pasta, but I had the worst gluten experience of my life. It was way beyond cross contamination. I agree that the food was delicious, but I would not risk it being are celiac or gluten intolerant, I regretted it deeply. The restaurant agreed to reimburse my plate and ‘look at the kitchen footage’… one week later and I am still waiting for the refund and never heard about their conclusion. I would not brand this place GF unless they change to a dedicated kitchen.
To end the night on an even lower note, although not the restaurant’s fault, our car got broken into, parked right outside the restaurant.
It's a Punk Rock themed Japanese (mostly) gluten-free restaurant that specializes in fried chicken (get the fried chicken, trust me). If that description doesn't entice you, you're probably not cool enough for this place anyway. Basically only thing that isn't gluten-free are some of the beer options (there are gluten-free options too)-great for me as my wife has the allergy and I like gluten in my beer. Glad we stumbled across this place.
Our awesome experience started with a phone call from Imani. She was following up about a request I made on Open Table for a quiet spot because I’m highly sensitive. She was so understanding and kind. When we arrived, we had a great place on the patio. The food met all expectations and the N/A cocktails were sophisticated. There were lots of gluten free options with a GF vanilla cheesecake to die for. The service was impeccable. The restaurant is located in a great neighborhood and we walked off the wonderful dinner we had.
Please support this all vegan establishment and their wonderful, attentive staff!
Celebrated my birthday here and had a great time!! The QR takes a little getting used to (particularly if your reception isn't great) but it's so efficient. Our food and drinks flowed, with no one waiting too long. The masked staff were welcoming and didn't rush us to leave. The general vibe was very friendly. I can recommend the French 75, Ethiopian Hummus, veggie sampler and gluten free injera. Thank you Enssaro!
Amazing gluten free Detroit style pizza! Honestly it’s my favorite gluten free pizza, beating out Tony’s Pizza napoletana. I always go for the big Von and have even purchased my own Mikes Hot Honey bottle from Sprouts to always have unlimited hot honey when devouring this delicious za. Staff is very friendly and has done a great job to reduce any chances of cross contamination. I have celiac disease so I’m very sensitive to any traces of gluten and haven’t had any issues. I just wish they had a SPG’s with gluten free option in San Jose so I could have this pizza more regularly. Great Pizza!
My favorite Habesha restaurant!! The food is so good! The lamb tibs, atakilt (cabbage) and shiro (puréed chickpeas) are my favorites. I would say skip the doro wot (it’s 2 chicken drumsticks, needed salt). The tibs portions are more generous than most Ethiopian restaurants.
The sambusas (samosa) were super fresh. The beef was great. The lentil ones were super spicy and too hot for me.
The service is impressive. Our waitress gifted us baklava. It was so fresh I could taste the rose water.
They have real injera that is gluten free but make sure you ask for it. And hands down Ethiopian food is the most delicious vegan/vegetarian food ever.
Every time we go the place is packed but we typically walk in without a reservation. The inside is lovely and there is outdoor seating in the back.
Delicious Ethiopian food, one of the best in the area. This is our go-to for special occasions. We always get the big combo platter, which has a bit of everything, and it's all so tasty! They have teff-based injera bread available, which is great if you are gluten free. Service can be a little slow, and it's always on the cold side, even indoors, but the food is worth it.
Great sandwiches including a HUGE vegan menu. They have gluten free/vegan bread as an option also for those that prefer it. Order ahead since it might take a bit of time to get the sandwiches made.
Being Gluten-Free....I am challenged at restaurants. I was pleasantly surprised at the absolute flavor and taste of the food. Even my non-gluten free family loved the fried chicken. Thsnk you
Food was very good! I had the chicken wings appetizer and the oxtail entree. The passion tea drink was very good too. Good to make a reservation if you can. Next time I would like to try the Griot entree and the Tostones appetizer. Staff was friendly and helpful to suggest which items to order. The menu is clearly labeled with lots of gluten-free items and most things are organic. They have a few vegetarian and vegan options as well.
I would not recommend going here if you are in a hurry, it's more of a take-your-time- and-enjoy-the-evening type of place. I had one drink and one appetizer and one entree and the experience took about 1 hour.
So glad I finally came by today for a late lunch (2PM) - cool place (love the decor/style), nice staff & tasty food. Some dishes you will not find in the average Thai restaurant in the Bay Area. For example, the chef or owner is from northern Thailand so the menu features a top Northern Thai dish - Kao Soi noodle soup (beef or chicken), or the all time fav 'street food' grilled pork skewers (moo ping) served with sticky rice (ck out the menu on their website).
I had the Pad Kemao Chicken (menu says beef but they are happy to make dishes with what you like & even have Beyond Meat dishes on the menu - cool to see stir fried basil with Beyond Meat (Krapao Beyond Neur). The taste of my wok fried pad kemao was delicious, same or better than any I've had on prior trips to Bangkok. Glad to have discovered a solid Thai restaurant that doesn't have watered down flavors (adapted for non-Thais). Good to see they have a lot of gluten free and vegan choices on the menu too. Definitely will be back, keep up the good work!
There are gluten free options for people not allergic or celiac. If you are very sensitive don't dine here unless you are content with salad. The staff was five stars for transparency, and not sending me home with six weeks of agony. Really appreciate it.
The unclear gluten designated dishes as clear lack of staff understanding - and more over making stuff up on the spot - is having me not come here anymore. A shame as I was a regular before these recent changes in menu and staff training.
This charming, quiet place is heaven.
My husband, omnjomnivore, and I, forced to eat dairy and gluten free, were both incredibly happy with the high quality, fresh food we received on top of very nice and respectful service.
There’s one meal, you choose the size of your portion.
I cannot stress enough how amazing the food was. Vegetables, beans and rice cooked and seasoned to perfection. Collard greens like I’ve never had them before: juicy, tender but with a wonderful bite, deliciously seasoned and clearly very fresh. The soup was amazing, too. Fragrant, perfect texture and the right amount of it, too.
We are so grateful for this meal. Thank you so much!!
Horrible and a rip off! My first time ordering here. I was drawn in by the positive reviews and gluten-free injera. I ordered delivery through Uber Eats near closing time on Friday. I ordered Full Order Shiro Wet which comes with 6 items plus extra injera. What I received was injera with salad and shiro wet only. They were closed by the time I realized my order was wrong and they didn't answer the phone. The salad was EXTREMELY salty and almost chemical tasting, and the shiro wet was bland. I'm very disappointed with this experience.
Reliable staple in my life. Fontell is a great host and member of the team. Such a great place for gluten free fries, gluten free wings, gluten free pizza, vegan Buffalo sauce is a must!
I took my staff here for lunch. It was a top notch experience. Rosa, our server, was so amazing. She was very friendly, engaging and welcoming. The food was so flavorful and beautifully arranged on the plate. There were several vegetarian and gluten free options available. The atmosphere was a vibe, from the music to the decor. It's very obvious that a lot of thought and attention to detail went into creating this space!
One of my favorite restaurants in Oakland. The food is delicious, and I always leave feeling nourished and comforted. Would recommend the veggie combo and the mushroom tibbs! I also appreciate that their injera is 100% teff, so no extra cost for our gluten free folks.
Love this place. We tried so many dishes and shared them all. Lots of options for the vegetarians and gluten-free people in our group. Desserts are amazing too. Good beer selection. The owner is super nice and we will definitely be back.

Here's our experience:
Our waiter forgot to sub out the noodles in the Drunken Noodles for the gluten free option. My wife discussed this with him very clearly. This is a very routine beginning of the meal as my wife is deathly allergic to gluten. I think you can see where this is going... The noodles arrived, we ate them. They were fine. And then you remember they were $27. Ouch.
The waiter, who was hard to flag down to order, and then later to get the check, was oddly chatty with us as we were gathering our things. All of this made sense 15 minutes later when my wife starting to get very sick. We looked at the photos online and realized he forgot to sub the noodles.
We called when they re-opened and my wife was completely gaslit. "I need to talk to the waiter before I refund anything". "He says you never discussed your allergy". "I can only refund the noodles, not the Massaman Curry". "We can't refund the tip".
My wife was sick for two weeks. She threw up, she lay in bed for 24 hours. We 100% would have forgiven everything had they just owned up to the mistake!! Who cares about $70!! That wasn't even the point.
This place is silly. The vibes stink, the service is distant and and incompetent (your one job is to not poison the guests, right?). The prices are cuckoo. ($6 for a Topo Chico) The food in fine. We can do better.
As this poor country is getting kneecapped by psychopaths and grifters, you search out sane, empathetic communities who are trying to take care of each other.
Unfortunately, this place is extractive and predatory. AVOID.
Great place to get a big breakfast for under $20. Gluten free crepes, pancakes and toast. Fresh food always. Super friendly flexible staff and owners (ie let me swap the ham on my Benedict for GF bread, no upcharge, never complain when I bring my own coffee). Great place to bring the kids (kid menu) and to WORK! Large open space with just the right amount of noise/activity to keep you on task).
Not pleased with the French Toast at all. It was below average and the custard seemed extremely light. The bread seemed barely toasted. The banana was not fresh or near fresh. It's difficult to believe this meal was passed off to someone. I should have ordered the the gluten free french toast instead; it's typically consistent. Oakland's restaurant industry has become weaker and weaker while the food prices become more expensive; it's so sad and disheartening.
An absolutely amazing experience tonight. Came out with friends for some food, and had a great time chatting while watching pokemon and eating amazing burgers. A friend can't eat gluten and they had gluten-free options for them. Both me and them got the smokehouse burger which was amazing. At first I was skeptical of the price but wow. The amount of food and how filling it was was absolutely worth it. Also it was delicious. The other burgers chosen looked good too. One of my friends are a walk away so they will be back with their partner!
I LOVE this place! My roommates and I are obsessed with the nachos, their protein options never miss and it's all quality and generous quantity. I really love the fried Japanese sweet potato tacos & tostadas too, and the mushroom options are great for the soy-free/gluten-free crowd. I wish nothing but success for La Venganza and their yummy, plant-based delicious dishes, we will keep coming back!!
The best spot in all of Jack London. Great Detroit style pizzas (can get gluten-free and/or vegan), tons of ciders and beers, pinball, board games, vibes
Love this place. Brunch is the best for the Brats and Eggs. They always have an interesting game brat option, and it is always delicious. The beer selection is great, and they have good gluten free food options for my wife.
We got the smoothie + green dragon sandwich on sourdough bread. It was very yummy and fresh. We also got the caprese panini with chicken on a gluten-free bagel and it was amazing - highly recommend!! the coffee was mid. i got an iced vanilla latte with soy milk, i think it would be better if you just got hot coffee here. the cashier was super nice and sweet!!!
The best food I had while in Oakland "bar" none. I'm just shocked that I found a place with legitimate Gluten Free options. Still shocked. Fish Tacos better than San Diego. Best grilled Brussels ever. Evening bartender works his butt off. You better tip this guy.
This is our neighborhood coffee shop, and it's great. You can order breakfast to go from the restaurant they're a part of, or eat at one of the the outside tables. They carry pastries, and quite a few gluten free ones. The reason for only giving 4 stars is that I used to only get their chai latte, which they make themselves and has previously been great always, but the last few times I've gotten them they've been very bitter and weird tasting.
Don’t misunderstand, the food is delicious. However, I was recently diagnosed with celiac disease, and it pains me to be limited to much narrower options of where to eat. The falafel on uber eats is very prominently labeled Gluten Free but it comes served on top of non-GF pita bread, which could cause a severe reaction in those who are celiac. I don’t wish ill on this business, their food is delicious, but the uber eats app doesn’t even have the option to ask for them to remove the pita bread from the order. I just wish there was more transparency on the gluten quality of the food
New favourite vegan Mexican spot! Got a variety of gluten-free tacos and the Al Pastor burrito with Hibiscus and everything was so delicious! Generous portions and we loved the vegan cheese as well. I really liked that the ingredients were very fresh and it wasn’t like your typical processed mock meats. Will be back for sure

Look, all the food here is decent. Great variety, good lunch spot. They’re pretty much the only deli/lunch spot in a 5-7 block radius & they know it. You can get breakfast. The tuna salad’s good. The pre-packaged salads are freshly made & they’ve got beer/wine options for your after-work pick-up on the way home.
The pros:
• They have some gluten-free sandwich bread. (Important)
• The portions are generous.
• The ppl that work here remember regulars names. (Which is great as I’ve been coming here for 7 years now)
The only negative about coming here is Oakland’s rent prices are probably so insane that Sierra has to charge you a tooth & nail for basic lunch items. A peanut butter & jelly sandwich on gluten-free bread costs me $9.
A breakfast platter (2 scrambled eggs w/ cheese, bacon, gluten-free toast, potatoes) & an orange juice was like $24.
I’m from NYC, the land of bodegas aka corner stores where there’s a deli like this sometimes twice on the same block, & everything is super affordable. So even after living in Oakland for some time, I always shake my head leaving here feeling light in the wallet. It’s the only reason I can’t drop 5 stars. Because rent aside, if U live/work nearby, this is your go-to spot to get food in this relative food desert of a neighborhood so they can tack on a buck or two & you’ve gotta pony up.
But- for what you pay for, they really do try & hook it up with generous portions.
