I felt like I was in Heaven when I walked in! 100% gluten-free! I could have anything! This was the best grilled cheese I’ve had in my life! And my blueberry scone was amazing! I took the coffee cake with me for breakfast tomorrow! I cannot wait until my next visit!! And they make ordering ahead on their App so easy!
Surviving of unsuspecting tourist! The gluten free pancakes were nasty, very dry and tasteless. I got then banana foster and that was plain uncooked banana’s with whip cream and plain syrup. My husband ordered seafood omelette and their seafood is not fresh. His shrimp was hard! WOW! This place was a mistake. The waitress did not present well either. Your better off going to IHOP!
Food and service was wonderful. I came here a few days in a row on my vacation! The waitlist was accurate and gave me flexibility to walk around. Also - I have celiac and the menu was extremely easy to navigate as someone with an allergy!
WOW!! LOVE!! came here from Ohio on vacation and will be back before we leave in a week (lol). Paige was amazing, attentive & came back at the perfect times. She offered a gluten free menu to me & manager Chris was HILARIOUS & so kind, would come back just to see Chris. Amazing food and atmosphere.
This is delicious! I got salted caramel in chocolate cone and hubby got rum banana pudding in coconut cone and we are both very pleased with our choices. Read another review about gluten free options so we needed to check it out. Did NOT disappoint!!!
Amazing place to grab a bite.
Think "Chipotle" but higher quality and good. The staff is friendly, the food is excellent, the prices are reasonable, and the outdoor seating area is nice. And the queso is gluten free! In fact, everything they have on the line is gluten free (not the burrito wrap obviously).
I would take this over most of the overpriced stuffy restaurants in the area on most days.
I visit Hilton Head yearly. This is my place to go when I want pizza. I have a lot of sensitivities. I'm able to get a tasty gluten-free, vegan cheese, veggie pizza, with enough for two meals. If you like water, it's an island thing to have "interesting tasting" water, not the restaurant. 😉
We didn’t realize this gem has been here 14 years! But, I am thankful we finally discovered it on our last trip to HH. Better late than never!
I was initially impressed as I was walking to get inside, at the bounty that grows outside. Beautifully done!!
Charming inside. Not very much indoor seating, but cute spots right outside the front door, and another area off to the side.
We made up for lost time & visited here multiple times during our stay. I care about what I eat, and this place delivers with clean food, fresh ingredients, and it’s flavorful vegan!
I tried the So-Cal Wrap and it instantly became my favorite! They made it gluten-free for me with a rice paper wrapper. I enjoyed it for breakfast many mornings ☺️
The Salad Sampler was my next favorite.
Traveling home, I didn’t want to have to worry about finding healthy food on the road, so to-go orders kept us filled on the way home.
I also loved the Kale Chips. The Nutritional Yeast giving a nice cheese taste.
I almost forgot to mention the service! Always friendly, welcoming and helpful. A place that you feel impelled to come back to.
I wish I could have taken this cute place back home with me & plopped in on Main Street in Downtown Hendersonville, NC! I miss it!!! 😪
But, we will definitely be back!
We chose this place based on reviews and we wanted the view, which was lovely.
Service was a little slow bringing drinks but outside was busy. My daughter-law made in very clear she HAD to be gluten and dairy free due to allergies. The waitress assured her her meal would be ok. My husband and swordfish- very small and not good. I had stuffed flounder which was tasty but warm not hot. Worst of all my daughter-law’s dinner came with butter on the vegetables and in the rice and beans! The manager brought her a salad instead. I would not recommend.

The ribs are literally fall off the bone. My wife is allergic to Gluten so the fact that the sauces are gluten free was definitely a plus. The service was friendly, informative and attentive
One if the best gluten free cauliflower crust pizzas I have had! He asked if I wanted it crispy!! Which is my favorite way to have a cauliflower crust. Great service!
Their burgers and milkshakes are absolutely delicious! Especially the cinnamon toast crunch milkshake. YUM! They did lettuce as a "bun" for my daughter who has gluten issues.
Chef is doing original, tasty work at this pleasant spot in Shelter Cove. The shrimp shared plate was a revelation. Half dozen fat local shrimp sat in a creamy sauce, served with fresh mixed greens and slices of toasted baguette. It could be an entree right there. The Chicken in Pesto was an enormous bowl of linguine with a big pile of fresh, grilled chicken breast. The pesto sauce was very rich and creamy and loaded with grilled vegetables. Very impressive dish.
Nice wine list, and, like the food, prices are reasonable.
The restaurant is handicap accessible, and plenty of ideas for gluten free diners and vegetarians, as well as kids. We ate on the patio, very pretty.
Service was friendly and efficient. Hilton Head is busy so plan on making reservations for dinner.
Great food and service. Staff knowledgeable about gluten free options. We sat outside overlooking the water. Possibly the best meal we had during our visit.
This was our first time dining at Cafe Al Dente and had a wonderful evening. The restaurant itself is not very large but it is a very nice room and well decorated. We had the Panko Fried Mozzarella Stack for an appetizer and it was delicious. One of us also got the warm salad and it was amazing. For dinner my wife had the Eggplant Parmigiana and my mother who is gluten free also had the gluten free version and both loved it. I personally had the Chicken Parmigiana and it was ok but a bit overcooked and dry. The service was fantastic and our server Amanda was so good helping my mother with the gluten free options. Overall a great experience and will definitely be back.
05/24/2025 - UPDATE - The rating above is for the Tavern only.
If I rated the Pizzeria only,
FOOD - ****
SERVICE - *
ATMOSPHERE - *
The Pizzeria could be a good outdoor addition but has a possibility of ultimately failing if no one takes the time to work with and properly train the staff. If the effort to train is NOT provided, the customers that have a bad experience will have an indirect negative view of the Tavern as well causing a steady decline in the ratings. Please take advantage of a good opportunity and ensure the staff is properly trained.
This update is related to the pizzeria. First, the pizzeria should have separate reviews and not be combined with the Tavern. The pizzeria will only decrease the overall total ratings and at first glance appear that the Tavern is on the decline for service. The star rating above is for the Tavern only. I decided to order from the pizzeria, so SammyDog and I walked from home to place and order and hang out. I could not determine if the outside bar was open or not. I did see one staff member slouched over at the bar, so I thought maybe they are just opening up. I sat down at the bar, the staff member looked at me but did not say a word. A few seconds later a young gentlemen came to help. He truly wanted to help when I asked about a gluten free pizza but had not been properly trained to provide an answer. This young man appeared that he wanted to do a good job but had not been provided with the tools for him or the pizzeria to succeed. He said that he would find someone that could answer my questions. Another gentlemen strolled out. Seemed like a nice enough guy but not a personality built for this line of work. He was a little unsteady as to what he knew regarding a gluten free pizza. I finally placed my order for a gluten free pizza and SammyDog and I returned home. I was surprised at how good the pizza tasted. I think I got lucky that night and did not become ill. Based on the interactions that I had with staff, I had started to walk away without placing an order. I have celiac and must be very careful. I do not enjoy four hours of projectile vomiting based on an incorrect answer. The pizzeria can be a nice outdoor area but will ultimately fail if the Top Dawg Tavern Management does not take the time to train and work with the staff.
The Dr. told me to work some other things into my 5+ miles walking with SammyDog each day. I decided what the heck and worked Top Dawg Tavern into our walk. Stopped in a few times for a couple of drinks mid afternoon while walking SammyDog. I did not order food even though I rated four stars. The reason is not to decrease the overall rating. Bartenders are friendly and easy to interact with. The red wine is a challenge to drink, or maybe I have become a little spoiled, so I stick with Tito's and Angry Orchard, both gluten-free. SammyDog is provided with water and a shot of whipped cream. I am sure that I will return a few times this week, the following...
The best words to describe Sweet Al’s are “charming” and “delicious”. They make all their pastries in-house, which even goes for their dietary restricted gluten free options. I personally had the long john donut with a peanut butter cream filling. It was even better than it sounds, and something worth traveling for :)… If that’s not your cup of tea, I would also try the double chocolate donut.
The coffee is fantastic and highly recommend the cold brew or iced Mocha (we’ve been there for coffee 5 times in 5 days).
Ownership and staff are wonderful, and take the time with innate curiosity to get to know their patrons. Easy 5 out of 5 stars.
Everyone that pleases gets four stars. An for a chain sandwich place these guys beat out the rest. The national chain across the hwy will be out of the job soon. So the new staff need a little direction an reminders but the seasoned employees have got it under control. Superior ingredients make this the place to go. The number of employees helps keep things running smoothly too. Even the gluten free bread aint bad an that's a hard substitute to find. Pricing is exactly like competition so do yourself a favor an make the switch from the weirdo Jared brand an hit up Jersey Mike's. They truly are a cut above
