**A Hidden Gem for Thai Food Lovers—Especially If You're Gluten Free!**
I can't believe I haven't reviewed my family's favorite Thai restaurant yet! We absolutely love Thai cuisine, and over the years, we've had it all across the U.S.—which taught us that not all Thai is created equal, especially when you're gluten free.
This place stands out for its incredible menu full of rich, authentic flavors *without* the gluten. Most dishes are naturally gluten free or can easily be made that way. But here’s the thing—even if you don’t need to eat gluten free, you’ll still be blown away. That’s because the food here is made with real, fresh ingredients by people who clearly know what they’re doing. Nothing from a can or freezer—just thoughtfully prepared, delicious dishes.
Every meal here feels like a warm hug. The presentation is beautiful, the flavors are on point, and the portions are satisfying. On top of all that, the staff are kind, attentive, and clearly care about giving you a great experience.
Whether you're a Thai food connoisseur or just looking for a consistently amazing meal, this spot is a must-visit!
Several guests in my party ordered vegetarian-specific dishes from the actual vegetarian menu. Shockingly, the vegetarian bento box came with shrimp tempura, pork dumplings, and crab in the sushi rolls. After asking the waitstaff whether there might have been a mistake, they responded that this was a known issue, which has been mentioned by multiple unhappy customers. “It comes with meat,” the waitress said. She added that they have the same problems with their gluten free menu…items are listed on a separate GF menu but are not actually gluten free. Unbelievable. Not sure why the owner/management seems to think this is acceptable. Also, the food was subpar at best. Don’t bother. It’s also insanely expensive for the quality of food. Hard pass.
Ben was our server he provided amazing service and ensured my gluten allergy was handled so I could safely enjoy my sushi. Everything was delicious and fresh.
Ate here last night around 9PM with my girlfriend. The bottom of the menus here state that they are happy to work with food allergies. However, my girlfriend was rushed to the ER last night due a horrible reaction to gluten that was in her food.
My girlfriend told the server that she had a gluten allergy, to which the server responded "Oh yes, gluten-free allergy". My girlfriend ordered sushi. The food was decent, but on the car ride home, she almost stopped breathing. Was rushed to the ER and given an IV, benadryl, and shot with an Epi pen. The medical team believes it was a bad reaction to gluten.
Not sure how it happened, but I suspect there was some sort of cross-contamination, which means rules aren't being followed in the kitchen. If you have food allergies, I'd skip this place. It isn't worth dying over.
I have celiac disease and a dairy allergy and the gluten free menu is so refreshing and makes it so much easier to navigate! I’ve never been sick from eating here and I order from here roughly once a week! Always amazing!
Very happy to have Cooper's Hawk available to be a regular evening out! They have a great variety for those with celiac or gluten problems. They even had a bread starter, and I could enjoy a full dining experience! The only reason for the 4 on the atmosphere was due to the sound level getting high and I couldn't hear from across the table. I will be back again! May even join the wine club! A great variety available!
This restaurant is one of my go-tos that will satisfy vegans, omnivores, halal, gluten free, etc. Everyone who eats here loves it. A few dietary highlights:
-I'm vegan and they have several great tofu options (my favorite is Yaki Udon with 2x Tofu) as well as unique vegan rolls that aren't just a cucumber avocado roll
-Their chicken teriyaki is Halal
-They use Tamari (gluten free soy sauce)
The staff is very accommodating and friendly and I enjoy both dining in and picking up.
Sushi is always good. Most importantly, the menu items are clearly labeled for which options are GLUTEN FREE! Greatly appreciate this and it makes ordering easy. They have a gf soy sauce and the wasabi is gf as well.
Amazing sushi place up in Traverse City! It's located inside an old elementary school and in an old classroom! The service was great and the owner was awesome. When I told him I had a gluten allergy he said he would have a new cutting board and utensils for me. There is already gluten free soy sauce on the table ready to go! Not only was it super safe to eat at but delicious as well. It's half the price you will get in town. It is totally worth the little drive for a great experience!
In the East End of Midland's downtown is this Maru sushi restaurant. Excellent menu with many options and friendly staff to help you. Cool vibe in a modern spacious building with high ceilings and nice lighting. I asked for gluten free options and waitress Keelie suggested a chef roll. She asked about my likes and dislikes and the roll that Chef Zack prepared was amazingly delicious. I asked for a spicy version and it was perfect... not too hot. My friend ordered Nigiri and was very happy as well. They also have a full stocked bar. We sat at a window table on this occasion but on a previous visit we dined at the bar and enjoyed a friendly discussion with the bartender. You will enjoy the food and be treated well here.
Excellent sushi, service is very good, and it's fairly quiet so conversation can happen (in between bites of great food). Gluten free soy available on request.
A group of 12 of us walked in to Firefly restaurant on a Saturday afternoon for a late lunch/early dinner, and even though we didn’t have a reservation, they sat us within 5 minutes of arriving.
The service there was great, and they were very accommodating and helpful when I asked about gluten free options. While they do not have a gluten free menu, they had several meals that could be prepared gluten free, which I appreciated.
Overall it was a nice meal for everyone, the atmosphere was fun, and we all enjoyed ourselves. Definitely recommend!

Staff takes special precautions when preparing gluten free sushi, can alter sushi rolls to leave out anything that has tempura, replace with steamed shrimp instead of fried, and they have GF soy sauce. They use clean utensils and workspace to make gluten free sushi. They also make gluten free fried rice options and fusion dishes and bento style boxes. The owners are kind and lovely people, very gracious. Have been eating here for a few years with no issues, and I am an extremely sensitive celiac disease patient. Like a human gluten detector. Definitely worth a drive and try!

Delicious food! They are very accommodating for a gluten free diet. They can make almost any roll with a gluten free option (e.g. steamed vegetables instead of tempura vegetables in the Mountain Dew roll), and have gluten free soy sauce. I have eaten there twice and have been very happy both times!
First time here, it was recommended by some individuals I met through pickleball (shoutout to Bash Pickleball in Warren). Two of them are the children of the owners of this restaurant. My priority in picking a sushi spot this time was to accommodate gluten-free individual(s) and Sushi Kafe ended up being that spot. Just let the server know that you're gluten-free and they will let you know what you're able to get. I made a reservation in advance (a week out) for a party of 9 at 6pm on a Sunday. I arrived 10-15 minutes early and our table was already set and ready for my group.
Four of us ended up getting a total of 9 sushi rolls + 4 nigiri to share, some of the recommendations given to us included: SnT, Triple Spicy Tuna, and Pink Panther. We ended up getting all 3 and other specialty rolls. The four of us agreed that all rolls were delicious, plus the other rolls we ended up ordering (can't remember all the names). Unfortunately, one of the individuals is a slightly heavier fellow who ate the majority of it; which also tells you how good the sushi is, but a couple of us were still hungry afterwards, so we ended up getting some wings later on at a different restaurant.
Overall, I'd definitely recommend this sushi spot, service, atmosphere, and quality were all on point. They were also generous to give us 3 servings of banana tempura ice cream for dessert, on the house. The only thing I can say they should add (just for the aesthetics) is a sushi boat for large orders.

The two appetizers and four orders at 5:15 took a while to cook with only a few people there. They do a lot of take-out, so maybe that's the reason for the delay. The server was helpful with the kids. The meal tasts were ok. They did have a gluten-free option. They automatically added a 20% tip on. Parking was good in the back.

The food was good. They tried very hard to keep one of our meals gluten free by cooking it separately and prior to the other meals. We had multiple food allergies at the table (from both sets of diners) and they did a great job of making it a safe eating experience.
Our chef, however, was not one of the ones that puts on any type of "show" and that was disappointing. That's part of the hibachi experience and we definitely missed it. They stated that someone would be around to take free photos for everyone when we arrived and that never happened.
We went because of a birthday coupon but in the future, we'll visit other hibachi restaurants, as we enjoy the experience and fun that this type of dining is supposed to provide and Benihana didn't live up to that expectation.
This place feels confused on what it is. It’s Asian restaurant that plays house music and serves kid sized 2 bite dishes for $16-and no it’s not because it’s gourmet-I’m talking a 2”x3” fried block of rice with 2 pieces of avocado on it. The lobster tacos were the size of those frozen mini tacos and reminded us of the flavored tuna packs with crackers. It’s just a very odd dining experience and the food felt just as confusing. The service was good-they helped with gluten and dairy restrictions. Definitely wouldn’t recommend this place or go here again.
Very impressed with how clean this restaurant is, including the bathroom. The fish was very fresh, as well. Very tasty.
An innovative decor for the US, I felt like I was in a small Japanese eatery. They have a limited, but creative menu.
The chef was very interactive with customers, offering suggestions. I would definitely visit again for a quick lunch. Staff was also very gluten free aware, as a celiac, this is always appreciated.
I would love to see a mixed Chirashi bowl in the future, but I bet if asked, it could be provided.
Great quick dining place!
I had the spicy Korean ramen very good the perfect spice. My husband has to eat gluten free and dairy free which they catered too. Good sized pieces of sushi 🍣. Very satisfying
My review is loaded with reasons of why I rated as I did… really nice place for sure! Great atmosphere.. they were booked solid for sitting at a table. We sat at the bar. They greeted us and came over to take our drink orders. Drinks were served quickly. Bartender/Server.. his name was Simone so he gets 6 stars for patience for running around 20 million times asking the chef questions. I’m lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, and garlic intolerant. So with that being said it’s 2025 restaurants should be versed in these dietary restrictions. How silly of you to have a menu with gluten intolerance foods highlighted/stated and then switch to a ridiculous menu to only make your servers lives extremely difficult. That poor gentlemen running around all night trying to accommodate. Chef Bruce Allen & Chef Noel Cabrera so many places get it. You don’t. You have to pivot and learn how to accommodate dietary restrictions. Your menu is ridiculous simplify things for customers and your staff! There way of ‘accommodating’ was wait til 10pm let us clean up and then prepare your meal?! That’s ridiculous! I had an extremely long day just wanted to spend time with my significant other have a nice dinner and a good time. Somehow getting food out has become a chore! Thanks
If you have dietary restrictions go to the bar and look for the gentleman I mentioned he will go thru hoops trying to make you happy. I hope they treat him well. If it weren’t for him I would have walked out!
Parking is side street paid or garage paid via app. I saw the meter maid doing his rounds they figure you out and charge! Pay it or you’ll get something in the mail.
My partner and I went here on a whim for date night and was absolutely floored by how wonderful everything was! Our server, Linda, was quick, kind, and wonderful! The food was delicious and allergy conscious, as we’re both gluten free! You can get gluten free soy sauce which felt like a luxury we haven’t found many other places! We will absolutely be back!
Great experience, great food. Gluten free options are listed on the menu and they have tamari soy sauce for an extra dollar (that was a bit annoying as I didn't Even finish the full container they gave me). Restaurant atmosphere was pleasant, clean, would definitely go back!
We have been patrons of Shiro Restaurant for the last several months. We would typically order sushi rolls spending between $100-$150 every week. We were trying to be supportive to our local restaurants throughout the pandemic , especially during the time when restaurants were limited to carryout orders. We would typically order on a Sat. or Sun between 4-5 pm. Our average order was for 15-20 rolls of sushi plus salads. We enjoyed the freshness of the Shiro sushi & that they were very accommodating to my husband who suffers from Celiac. We also were lenient with the length of time that it would take to prepare our carryout order, occasionally waiting 1 hr. plus for our carryout. We had never had an issue up until this last Sun.4/2. We called Shiro to ask about how long the wait would be for a carryout order. The girl employee that answered the phone didn't know, so she asked another employee. That person picked up the phone and told my husband that they had only one carryout order in and it would be 20 min. So, we immediately got our order together & placed the order on the google restaurant ordering tool. The order was confirmed and it stated that the order would be ready between 5:09-5:24. We placed this order at approximately 4:15. So I immediately called Shiro to verify receipt of the order and how long it would take. We were told an hour. We placed this order within 5 minutes of our initial call to them. Once we arrived at Shiro we called to inquire the status of our order. We were told that it would take at least 15 more minutes. I then went into the restaurant to pickup our order and the man employee told me that our order wasn't ready yet. Also noting that they were having packing problems.I am not sure what that meant. He seemed scattered and ill prepared for customers. He then asked me again for my name and then said "Oh here it is!" He asked me to sign the receipt and gave me my order packaged up in a cardboard box.Once my husband and I arrived at home, I unpacked the order and noticed that our 2 salmon rolls were not in the box. Also, that our AAC rolls had tempura sprinkled on top. Note that ALL of our orders emphasize GLUTEN FREE on all of the sushi. I immediately called Shiro. The girl employee who answered the phone stated that they made a mistake and gave us part of someone else's order. She offered to replace the items or give us a credit. (They had also placed one of our avocado rolls next to the tempura rolls, making them contaminated with gluten/wheat) Then abruptly a gentleman employee got on the phone and said, "what's the problem with your order?" I explained to him what had occurred and then he became very argumentative. Asking me if I was going to bring the order back. I told him that I wasn't asked to bring the order back. He then went on to say that he needed to see the order to identify what happened. I was very taken back at his request. We had already driven almost 1 hr. round trip & he wanted to see what was done in order to give us the missing salmon rolls and replace the AAC & avocado rolls that were packaged together in the same box. I told him that we would be on our way to get our order corrected. My daughter left to bring the incorrect part of the order and get what we ordered. I received a call from the man employee. He began to tell me that they would make fresh salmon rolls. However, the AAC & avocado rolls were safe for my husband to eat. I told him that we have ordered these very same rolls with our past orders and that they had never had tempura sprinkled on them. He then told me that that is how they prepare the AAC rolls. that it is 100%safe and gluten free. I told him that I wanted new rolls. He said fine & told me that he would have them ready. Then a few min. after that he called me again. This time asserting that it was my mistake. I ordered the wrong AAC rolls. That I ordered it with the tempura on top. He maintained that the tempura had no wheat, then only to find out that it did. Then said "My bad!" He was untrained about food sensitivities. Do not recommend!
They were so knowledgeable about gluten free items, or items they could make gluten free. They even provided gluten free soy sauce. Sushi was fresh and delicious. Will be coming back!
They have a whole GF menu yet nothing is *actually GF. Would not recommend for folks with celiac disease. They are not willing to take simple steps to reduce cross contamination. I asked about changing gloves, using a clean roller and clean cutting board to make my sushi rolls the kitchen refused. I left. Would not recommend
Such a cute place! I'm in love with their Alaskan Roll, and they were super helpful with gluten-free options and even offer GF soy sauce. Great lunch deals, and very reasonable prices all around for some excellent sushi.
It’s one of the most inexpensive poke bowls I’ve had so far, and it was really good too. I had white rice, spicy salmon, carrots, cucumbers, mango, pineapple, avocado, gluten free soy sauce and cusabi. I love how they label what items are vegan and gluten free on their menu!
So, let me start with: I love this place. Regular or large, the portions are well worth the price, most especially considering the quality of ingredients.
Secondly, I have celiac disease. This is one of the few places I have found that do not get me violently ill. The attention to detail is amazing and I’ve eaten here many times without getting sick. The menus are clearly labeled with allergens and I love it. Full of flavor and safe. Very clean very fresh.
I recommend going in person, over DoorDash or their app, !!!although the app does give you some goodies when you sign up, better than dd meals.
In person is just so much better. The staff is awesome, and they will give you exactly what you want. The flavors are fantastic and quite honestly the amount of allergen info is just a breath of fresh air. I am always hesitant to eat at a new place and I tried it a few months back and I’m so thrilled.
Sometimes the way I get a large or even regular bowl is so deliciously satisfying and filling, it is multiple meals for me. At first I avoided them, the price point seemed high. It’s seriously not. The amount you get and the quality of filling and fresh ingredients is so worth it’s insane.
I’ll tell anyone I can about this place. Their boba tea is great too.
Sorry if this is a jumble of word salad of a review, I’m currently eating their food and just so happy.
Give this place a try!
So I live close and every time I drove past here I think "hmmm... Not so sure about that". Boy was I wrong and so glad I stopped in.
The waitress was kind, friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. I'm gluten free (not by choice but real allergy), and she knew what *should* be safe and what wasn't. (No GF menu/labels) when my roll had been prepared with eel sauce (Not GF) she had it remade before even brining it out. Further, they had GF soy sauce! (Also, I didn't get cross contamination sick after after so bonus!)
I had the AR-15 and the yellow tail roll. Both were well made and delicious.
I was pleased with a great level of service, a friendly and kind waitress.
I will absolutely return and you should give this place a try!
The staff always rock this place. Great food, great service, lovely, clean interior. I've ordered in and taken out. Gluten free tamari. I drool just thinking about it lol.
Delicious food with a wide range of options, including vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free choices. You can choose from their menu or create your own dish.
